Had the same thing happen to me back in May. I was without the Rivian for close to two months and the total bill for just the repairs was just south of $25K.

But the body shop did a great job and we're back, good as new.

Not sure of the laws in UT, but in TX, you can file a diminished value claim to recoup some of the value you've lost (when you resell it, this will def show up on a carfax and you'll lose value on your trade in) - I'm still fighting on mine, but I hope to get ~$7K back (minus legal fees)

I got rear ended in nearly the same spot, but a little higher since it was SUV to SUV contact, and a little more impact it looks like. The other driver was not even paying attention. I gunned it at the last second to avoid a much worse impact. Probably saved him a trip to the hospital. Oddly, I barely felt a thing, but it was very loud on impact. I can definitely vouch for the Rivian feeling like a tank when getting hit. I'm sure the other driver didn't like the way it felt though.

I drove this away from the scene with no issues other than cosmetic. Drove it for a couple weeks until the insurance paid for a tow to the body shop because it was 3 hours away to the nearest Rivian certified repair center, and I didn't want to risk any malfunctions in middle of nowhere hours from home.

This ended up costing approximately $25K to fix (Insurance Paid), and took 2 months at the repair center. Due to repair center issues as well as Rivian parts delays. I used Crash Champions LUXE in Antioch, TN (Nashville area). They apparently had their painter quit in the middle of my repair. Other issues I had when it was returned... Inside 3rd row kick panel was broken and not repaired, 3rd row air duct was completely missing from when they reassembled everything (Rivian actually replaced this for me) there was some paint overspray on the drivers side doors, and the rear lift gate was not adjusted correctly causing paint to rub off. They have agreed to fix all of the issues, but now I have to get it back in the shop.

I hated not being able to drive it for 2 months!!!!

Wife was driving up Parleys Canyon to Park City today when a truck dumped a bunch of black smoke, and the whole highway lost visibility. Everyone in the left lane slammed on their brakes, but a 16-year-old behind her didn’t stop in time. Thankfully everyone’s fine, but the Rivian got a little kiss.

She said part of the undercarriage is damaged and and they assumed that it was the battery, but there were no errors on the dash. The cop on scene told her not to plug it in at home and would get it to the shop ASAP. Not sure what to make of that—my guess is it’s just the underbody protection that got banged up. If it were me, I probably would have just driven it home and charged like normal until the shop could take a look so it’s not out for too long. Instead, it ended up getting towed in. Hopefully it isn’t too long before it’s back on the road.

She didn’t get any pictures of the other car, but it was a newer Mustang.

Any tips for handling the rental? I’m guessing a Rivian loaner isn’t an option.

Probably totaled if you ask meā€¦šŸ˜‰

Sorry to see this mishap and I'm glad everyone was physically ok. You're gonna be happy for insurance as this is probably well over $10,000 damage and 3~4 weeks in the shop for disassembly, inspection, ordering replacement parts, parts availability and logistics delivery, prep, paint, assembly, sensor alignmen, etc..... And here's another kicker that I realized after I had an accident in my 2015 Lexus 450h in 2021. There's a diminished value loss even if the repair is OEM certified with OEM parts. I copied the following information from an AI search.

To get compensated for the loss of value after a vehicle accident, you can file a diminished value claim with the at-fault driver's insurance company. This claim seeks to recover the difference in your car's market value before and after the accident, even if repairs have been made.

Understanding Diminished Value Claims
Diminished value refers to the loss in a vehicle's market value after it has been involved in an accident, even if it has been fully repaired. This loss occurs because potential buyers often prefer vehicles with no accident history, which can significantly reduce resale value.
Types of Diminished Value
There are three main types of diminished value:
1. Immediate Diminished Value
  • This occurs right after the accident, before any repairs are made.
  • The vehicle's value drops due to visible damage.
2. Inherent Diminished Value
  • This is the most common type and refers to the loss in value that persists even after repairs.
  • Buyers are less willing to pay full price for a vehicle with an accident history.
3. Repair-Related Diminished Value
  • This happens when repairs are not done properly or use non-original parts, further lowering the vehicle's value.
Filing a Diminished Value Claim
To seek compensation for diminished value, follow these steps:
  1. Determine Eligibility: You can file a claim if you were not at fault for the accident.
  2. Gather Documentation: Collect evidence such as:
    • Pre-accident vehicle value (e.g., appraisal, market research)
    • Post-repair value (e.g., repair invoices, current market value)
    • Accident report and insurance details.
  3. File with the At-Fault Driver’s Insurance: Submit your claim to the insurance company of the driver responsible for the accident. In some cases, you may be able to file through your own insurer.
  4. Follow State Regulations: Be aware of your state’s laws regarding diminished value claims, including deadlines for filing, which can vary (often 1-2 years).
  5. Negotiate: Be prepared to negotiate with the insurance company, as they may initially undervalue your claim.
By understanding these aspects, you can effectively pursue compensation for the loss in value of your vehicle after an accident.
