I’m a Tesla early adopter and am considering an R1S. I haven’t put a deposit down yet. I understand that R1S shop access is invite only and doesn’t last forever. Couple of questions:
  • If I place a deposit today, could shop access happen within a couple of months? I live within 30 miles of a service center if that matters
  • Would the prices in the shop be the same as the configurator since I’m placing a deposit after the increases? I noticed some people posting prices of shop vehicles that are below configurator prices.

For R1S, there’s a huge backlog. For new reservations, you 99% won’t get shop access until mid 2024 at the earliest.

Prices aren’t locked. Reservation only gets you a place in line. Pre March 2022 reservation holders are the only people who get to preserve original prices.

Doubtful you’ll get shop access anytime soon.

Thanks for advising guys. I really hate to replace my wife’s Yukon with another ICE but the price and wait time make the R1S a no go. Back to looking at Defenders……..

Why don't you buy a pre-owned one? Currently selling for close to MSRP.

This one sold yesterday $450 under MSRP, after auction fees, plus no $1800 destination charge that Rivian does. Only 2600 miles good as new.

Good to see used prices are coming back down to reality but really wanted to keep the price below $80k. Not sure if that will ever happen with an R1S and at least 300 mile range. We need a 3 row SUV with some size so even an R2 doesn’t seem appealing. Electric cars have a long way to go to compete with ICE counterparts. I feel that the pandemic has cost us 3 years of innovation in the electric car space.

Well you are late to this thread and just stated what the other more informative members already stated.

There's not much presently in the 3-row mid/large SUV space with 300+ miles of range that is under $80,000. The 2024 Volvo EX90 is supposed to have 300 miles of range, and is a three-row with a price tag that the company says is "under $80,000." The Kia EV9 is another that will be available in 2024 that may have the range you're looking for at the $80k mark. As far as I'm aware, neither vehicle qualifies for the IRA tax credit.

The dual-motor R1S with the Standard battery pack is $78,000. It doesn't quite have the range you're looking for (260 miles) but it's a larger and more capable vehicle than either the Kia or Volvo and qualifies for a $3,750 tax credit. With the Large pack you get 340 miles, but the price goes to $84,000 so is above the threshold for the tax credit.

As others point out, access to the R1 Shop is highly unlikely for new orders and frankly, I suspect it's unlikely you'll be able to take delivery of any of the above in 2024.

Yeah that’s the conundrum. We do frequent 350 mile road trips and the areas we frequent have deplorable pothole prone roads. So crossovers have been omitted from the list. Truthfully, I wouldn’t be surprised if Rivian cancels the 260 mile R1S.

Funny. We just sent to a Rivian SC and saw our exact config. Love it.
Drove to LR and checked out Defenders for a second but decided we’ll get the R1S and if we don’t like it we’ll look into a Defender or RR.

Interesting, what’s your ETA for delivery? How long ago did you place your deposit?

I would be surprised if they cancel the small pack. It is an LFP battery pack so can charge to 100% all of the time. Given that the day to day range is not far off from the large pack and gives access to a completely different market comping in under 80k. The small pack with dual motors is a pretty decent configuration for a vehicle if road trips is not a priority.

Interesting, I didn’t know it was going to be an LFP pack.

A standard pack that qualifies for the full tax credit might be one of the top selling configurations of the R1S.
