Finally, I have a chip on my windshield, confirming my doubts about its quality. The chip is less than the size of a dime.

What is the best solution: repair or replacement? I'm in the East Bay Area.

Also please suggest options for Windshield protection.

Feedback and suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Bikram

Road damage does not equate to build/material quality. It happens to every glass maker and is no different than getting a flat tire.

Sounds like your chip is small enough for chip filler repair. Just need to get it done before it spiders and cracks across the glass.

I got a chip on the highway ten days ago, booked a Safelite repair but the next morning I went out to the garage to find it had spidered up and down. Safelite could order and replace the glass but can’t calibrate Rivians (they said they only recently started calibrating Teslas). So I called the Rivian certified collision place I’ve used for Teslas in the past, and they ordered the windshield for me. It’s been a week, no word yet.

I've had good luck repairing chips and small cracks using the Rain-X 600001 Windshield Repair Kit. It's inexpensive and one kit can repair a dozen or so chips. I've used it several times on different vehicles and the repaired spots are hard to find.

Living in Arizona, I get a sizable chip or a full-up crack around once a year on each of the cars. There are a lot of rocks getting kicked up. When I bought the R1S 10 months ago, I did some tinting for the heat and also had the shop apply a liquid treatment to strengthen the glass called SharpShield (https://sharplinepro.com/sharpshield-liquid-windshield-protection/). This is observational only, but I've had several rock hits that were quite loud, the kind that usually chip the windshield, and all I've been able to find is a small pit. I think the coating has helped.

Unfortunately, a month ago, I was driving on a city street and there were tractor-mounted lawn mowers on both sides of the road, mowing on wide shoulders. As I was approaching, one kicked up a rock and chipped my R1S windshield. Never had something like happen before. I attached a picture of the chip, and it repaired just fine with the Rain-X kit. I couldn't get a picture of it after the repair because my camera wouldn't focus on it.
