Do you have the controls widget on your phone screen? Accidentally hitting that button while you put your phone back in your pocket (for example) can do this ...
I have the widget on my phone but did not accidentally hit any button. My home security camera caught the moment that the frunk opened and I was not using my phone at/around the time it happened. I know this for sure because I was on a work call at the time (on my laptop not my phone) and my phone was sitting in the other room.

I just had this happen to me twice over the last 2 days (G1 R1T) Filed a service ticket. Support also had me do a full reset.
Ever have the app time out trying to wake the vehicle?

Fisker had major issues with buffered commands, basically couldn't use the app for those functions, since if it didn't work at the time, for whatever reason, it'd still be commanded the next time it was able to communicate properly. I've not seen this happen with my Rivian, but it sure seems like it could be the culprit in certain situations.

This seems to be a likely scenario. I do remember delayed / non responsive button taps in the app.

seems like the more user friendly design would be to throw an error w/in 30 seconds and have the request timeout rather than keep that open frunk command buffered and go out at some random time.

This was happening our our R1S when we first picked it up - would often wake up in the morning to an open frunk, or it opening on its own around 30 mins after locking. Mobile service came out and found a faulty latch sensor, they replaced and has not happened once since (around a year at this point).

My 2026 R1S is only couple of weeks old. Today suddenly frunk button refused to open hood. I can use app to open and once opened, button closed it without issue. The button is just not responsive when you try to open hood. Performed infotainment two buttons reset but did not help. Anyone has had similar issue?

Was the vehicle unlocked? The button on the outside will only open it if the vehicle is unlocked.

if the vehicle was unlocked, then perhaps there is something confusing it into thinking it's locked - which would require a service ticket.

Edit: I see you said you did an infotainment reset - try a "full vehicle restart" by holding the leftmost steering wheel button and the overhead-center hazard flasher button for ~10 seconds. (Instead of the leftmost and rightmost steering wheel buttons for the infotainment reset.)

This. It has to be completely unlocked - the button won't work if just the driver's door is unlocked.

When this happened car was unlocked. But it somehow reset itself after I parked in my garage and locked doors for couple of hours. It might’ve been confused just like you described.

But I have been open hood using button with car unlocked and locked. I just did a test ant it functions normal

Slightly off topic. These incidents have revealed a critical issue regarding Rivian’s manual opening capabilities for rear doors and hood. For a vehicle specially designed for off-roading, mechanical release is super important is case of electronic error and 12V failure.
