I’d be… honestly… shocked. Because this creates that whole rat’s nest of…. Do I order in October and not get it or??? They’ll need to clarify how this is going to work quickly.

Only 15% of Tesla owners pay for FSD. That means 85% don’t care, and FSD is extremely good right now.

regardless, this still drops a major hardware and software change in the middle of a model year. Where/when do they draw that line? And if I’m getting Autonomy free for the life of the vehicle… might as well wait for RAP1. This has the potential to be a cluster.

It's my understanding that there won't be a Launch Edition + RAP1. This is the only way to get Lifetime free for life:

Launch Edition + Gen 2 hardware + Lifetime autonomy

Everything else will either be Gen 2 + $2,500 or RAP1 + $2,500

That's why Rivian will be more than happy to extend Launch Edition for as long as demand is there, because they can just use the old hardware and not have to throw in RAP1.

I go back to what I have been saying the LE P will be made for whoever wants minus RAP1. Then the Premium will be available with RAP 1 this will also maintain the higher margin of the LE model.

it’s just an awesome time for Rivian.

I think launch edition won’t include it so either you get it free and ok with gen2 or you pay $2500 for RAP1. At least they’re being transparent about timing and cost.

that would make sense. And if you pay $2500 for RAP1- is autonmy still then for the life of the vehicle?

I have heard no one from Rivian say that RAP1/lidar and Launch Edition are mutually exclusive. I asked someone at the service center in Fishers and he said they have not been told anything either way and I believe him. I'm not saying anyone that thinks that is wrong but it's not official yet. The fact is that we just don't know until Rivian tells officially.

I was told from the person I talked to that the Launch Edition will be available for as long as they are selling them. That sounds like it will continue past the current reservations if people keep reserving it.

I can see reasons for Rivian to handle the launch in many ways and none of them are going to make everyone happy. Guess what, no decision they make is going to do that. One main business principle is to make the least worst decision. I don't think we know enough of the details to know what Rivian will do yet.

The liability and lawsuits that would exist in the event that Rivian allows launch editions with rap one and LiDAR would be so significant that it would bankrupt the company. I see in no way shape or form that they’re gonna repeat the past problems that they have like the class action going on with the current GEN one models with the R2

I asked this at my 2nd demo drive last week. They said RAP1 and LiDAR will not be included in a LE vehicle. Autonomy+ will be $2500 one-time, as shown if you select the Premium trim, but not lifetime. Once they stopped selling Performance LE, no more lifetime Autonomy+. They even referenced “how Tesla does FSD”.

But until we hear from R.J. or “officially”, we don’t know.

What does "one time" mean if not "lifetime"? Both are in contrast to a monthly subscription payment option, and the terms at the bottom of the Autonomy+ details screen says it is tied to the vehicle and lasts as long as the vehicle is supported:
Available features vary by vehicle. Autonomy+ product features remain available during the lifetime of feature support for the hardware on the vehicle at delivery. Autonomy+ upgrade will remain with the vehicle upon ownership transfer
Don't expect Service/Demo Center reps to know anything that hasn't been publicly announced or is about to be publicly announced. I'm sure they get briefings before (or maybe after) big announcements, but otherwise they are likely told very little beyond what they need to do their job. The folks working in an Apple Store don't know anything about the next iPhone, or the new iOS, aside from what leaks or is in beta. If Rivian corporate hasn't announced the plans for something, the local service people probably don't have any actual knowledge of it.

I took that to mean it doesn’t transfer to a new owner after you which is part of the LE deal.

The description in the Autonomy+ pop-up, which is on all the trims not just Performance/LE, says otherwise.

So why does the LE say lifetime and selecting Premium trim say one time? Only Rivian knows, hopefully.

I didn’t and don’t take what a demo guide/SC employee says as gospel, was simply stating what they replied to the question.

I’m not interested in carrying on this thread like the ones about efficiency. You say your thought, I say mine. Neither of us knows what the difference means to Rivian. So I’ll go back to stealth mode. Nice chatting with you.
