I took my R1S on an unpaved road (baby steps before I try offroading) and noticed that there was a lot of noise from the front (mostly from dash) and rear of the car. I thought this was expected and had posted the question on another thread in this forum. The consensus was that I had not aired down which might have caused the rattling. However, what I started to notice was that even on paved road, if the road has a washboard surface, I could hear the same rattling noise. This also happens when the car goes over rumble strips on either side of the road.

I submitted a service ticket to Rivian and they sent a mobile tech to look into this. We took a drive and the tech was able to hear the noise and believed that it was coming from the A pillars and rear doors. Following this, the tech opened the panels and found that some screws were not fully torqued and on the A pillar few clips were broken. I took a drive post the fix, and the rattling noise is still there.

Now this is the bigger problem as far as I can see -

1. On calling Rivian service, tney are saying they can have this checked out at the service center in February (after 5 months). If these rattling noises are due to broken clips and loose screws, wouldn't it get worse if it is not fixed immediately. I got the car delivered mid-August and I have only 2000+ miles driving to office and back.
2. The second thing I notice is that Rivian has been updating the original service ticket with the cost of service. It was 500+ yesterday and it is 1000+ today. Aren't they supposed to fix these manufacturing issues without charging the customer?

Don't worry about costs being added to your tickets, this happens all the time. I was very alarmed the first time it happened to me too.

For warranty repairs they will 0 it out.

I had same issue with new mystery rattles.

Put truck in off road highest setting.
Check panels underneath for loose bolts.

I had a missing t30 bolt on rear and one falling out in front.

Center panel bolts were all marked with paint marker and all showed no sign of rotation.

I removed front and rear cover bolts one at a time and put blue loctite on them and tightened.
I also marked all the t30 bolts with a paint marker so that I quickly inspect to see if bolts rotate.
I saw yellow factory loctite on bolts but maybe panels were removed/reinstalled without fresh loctite.

Good luck with that they have the worst customer service for the price you pay for these vehicles

I called into service and they confirmed what you just said - that I don't need to worry about the cost. That's a relief. However, they do need to figure out a way to address these issues which are non critical in their view. It makes a bad ownership experience. Additionally, with a lack of test drives, prospective buyers are going to rely on their friends and family for test drives and recommendations. These issues are going to influence their recommendation. I am still convinced that this is one of the best EVs out in the market.

Rivian clearly needs to open more service centers. They have been opening retail locations recently which is good but not so much for new and existing customers. Further their service center staff are clearly slammed...it isn't fair to them either. Hopefully Rivian is working on this.

I’ve got so many rattles driving over cracks in pavement that my truck sounds like it’s going to fall apart. I need to get under it and look at the bottom aero cover fasteners, hopefully they are loose and more invasive investigation isn’t required.

My brother has the same complaints about his R1T.
