General question from a new Rivian owner and first time EV owner about regen braking. Specifically regen while in reverse.

I have gotten used to regen while driving. That was easy. And like almost everyone said, I actually have learned to love one-pedal driving and may even prefer it. I do miss the ability to just coast to a smooth stop though.

But, one thing I can not get used to and find really annoying is the regen while in reverse. First of all: WHY? There is no way there is any substantial energy being captured during the 20 feet I am in reverse. So why even enable regen while in reverse? The entire purpose of regen is to recapture energy. I am guessing it is to keep the driving experience consistent perhaps?
But, I find it extremely annoying when backing up--I am going 2-3mph and lift my foot off the accelerator slightly and the truck comes to a jerking stop, when I really want it to slow down to 1mph or coast to smooth stop over another 12 inches.
The regen is very powerful and if you release off the accelerator too much or too quickly, it jerks to an immediate stop. And I mean a JERK. It throws you. This is especially true when the truck is only going 2mph while in reverse. It doesn't slow the truck down like it does when you are going 35mph in Drive....it just stops the vehicle in its tracks because you are only going 2mph. It is so hard to find the right balance to keep the truck backing up at less than 5mph and also not activate the regen. And if you do accidently activate regen, it jerks to stop. Do y'all agree at all?

I live in a City and back into a lot of tight parking spaces, so this is an everyday frustration for me. I can't seem to find the balance of backing up very slowly and not jerking the truck.

Does every EV have regen while in reverse? If so, why?

I've gotten used to it. I have to do a lot of slow crawling in forward/reverse to get parked in my parking garage. To me the behavior at slow speeds is the same forward and reverse, and i prefer that. After never coasting in the truck, it'd be very difficult for my brain to estimate coasting in reverse if it didn't regen.

Obviously everyone is different but I like it this way. I don't think I've touched the brake pedal more than 5 times in the ~4 months I've had the truck.

The biggest hurdle to 1-pedal driving is training your brain to not lift off the accelerator completely. Once you get used to never taking your foot off it, it becomes easier to learn how to modulate the speed when moving very slowly, and I find it creates a more consistent backup experience than any of my previous ICE vehicles.

Same. But when I do, it squeals like a stuck pig!

I just drive in reverse as much as possible. It charges the batteries and takes miles off the odometer.

Strange, I would say I have the opposite experience. I've actually noticed that mine tends to roll at a VERY low speed when reversing and not aggressively apply the regen when I lift of the throttle. I back into my garage and have very little clearance front to back so, I have to be very cognoscente of this as to not kiss my garage wall.

Maybe my reverse speed is not high enough to experience what you have described.
