RJ highlighted Adventure as Rivian's primary goal.
I think that has been a key selling point, to their credit. It helped the R1 platform take off the way it did.
I also fear it's a weakness if you're trying to reach a mass market.
If you look at the Tracking Sheet here, 25% of reservations are in California, and all the top states are out west. Half the reservations -- 122 of them -- are from 6 western states. Then you get my state of Illinois and Georgia tied at 9 reservations, which could be organic, but could be bumped by Rivian employees in those two states. Put the five east coast states with the biggest populations -- FL, NY, PA, VA and NC -- together and you only reach 35 reservations. (The reservation total as I look is 248.)
Their visuals of "Adventure" look like driving off road. But off-roading isn't a thing east of the Mississippi where the bulk of the population lives. And while it's fun to think one "could" sleep comfortably in the car because of the fold-down seats, I don't really know anyone who does that or wants to. And I'm the founder of a kayak rental business.
I think Fun would be a better adjective than adventure.
Nail the bike stuff.
And don't show us that you can get 4 bikes on it while looking a bit ridiculous. Show us how simple it is to get the bike rack in place. I keep my Tundra at this point because it seems much easier to throw our bikes in than to try to attach some sort of rack that I need to remove to make my vehicle useful for anything else.
Show people lifting a cooler through the rear window. Show them tailgating.
I'm an adventure guy. I like RJ. But most of our fellow Americans are more into fun.
