In what universe!? ANYTHING the insurance companies can use to justify raising your rates they will.

Last June when I priced getting auto insurance through Rivian via Nationwide, they wouldn't offer me a policy unless I dropped my 19 year old daughter in college from the policy who has a PERFECT driving record and good student discount! According to my independent insurance agent, it was probably due to the accident where some other girl backed into her in a parking lot where THE OTHER insurance company accepted fault and paid it; i.e. now you don't even need to be the cause of an accident to get negatives consequences. SMH

And, yes our premiums went up 32% 6 months later. Coincidence? #not

My family and I love our R1S (Mongo). As I mentioned previously, it has replaced our Defender 110 Trek Edition. We have been in sand dunes, mud bogs, climbed rocks and roots, and even pulled out a Lexus ES350 out of a cornfield covered in 10” of snow.

My wife and load up 3 children, a jogging stroller, 2 children’s bikes (hitch) and the dogs into the R1S and head out to a local trail. The kids and Doberman ride+run up ahead and hit the single track, while my wife and I run with the stroller and pitbull along the crushed gravel.

After about 60 minutes we come back to find the rear passenger driver’s side window smashed in. Immediately, we are hit with disbelief. I jump in the car and review the gear guard video; and there he is (pictured). Very smooth operator, pulled up next to the R1S, walked up to the rear passenger window, pressed on the bottom portion of the window with a screwdriver, and fractured the glass, without setting off the alarm. He pushed the remainder of the glass in and then jumped into the car, only to emerge with nothing! (Bc living in Philadelphia suburbs we know never to leave anything out). He walked off, and we are now left with approx a $4000 bill! While waiting for parts, saran/plastic wrap, clear tape, gorilla tape layered on (not on paint).

Armed with this precious data, I reached out to all the local news stations! 6ABC picked it up, interviewed me, broadcast it, and within 24 hours a neighboring districts police officer reached out telling me he think he knows the culprit! Apparently the individual is already standing trial this summer for similar break-ins a few miles away. Additionally, in 2018 6ABC did a story about the guy, as he was compulsively breaking into vehicles in the same area while pretending to operate a drone (story below).

What the police now have is actual video of the suspect! Since he was notorious in the area, hopefully things will settle out a bit, and 1 less person is discouraged from vandalism.

Concerns:
1) why did the alarm not go off when he broke the window? Shouldn’t there be some sensors to detect this?

Something similar happened to me, and the cops caught him because of my efforts. Good on you for pursuing this, and terribly sorry it happened to you.

My repair was also around $7,500 just for a big dent. They had to remove the entire panel, fix the dent, repaint and order a new emblem. The real cost was because my truck had to be loaded onto a flat bed and sent to Rivian for a full computer calibration, since some of the sensors were disconnected during the repair. Fortunately, since the car was not moving when the incident occurred, the insurance company treated it under "comprehensive", therefore I only had to pay my deductible and it did not raise my premium. Hopefully your claim will be treated the same. Also, since you found the guy, if by chance he has insurance, your insurance company can go after him under subrogation to get your deductible refunded.

Ouch! Sorry this happened to Mongo. We do talk about it whenever we go to NY or Philly. Should we just leave the car unlocked? So that they can open and see nothing is there and move on. We always take the other car, Mache for now.

A single broken window is a $4000 repair? Eesh.

I smashed a bike crank into rear T glass
- authorized body shop( ‘BS’ )quoted $4600, claiming that spoiler and other ‘one time use’ components needed replacement.
Installed $100 DIY lexan with fancy tape and put in request to the SC For glass next servicing . Waited 10 weeks they did it for 70% less -( able to re-use components)
Insurance company helped - they were stunned and reluctant to pay the BS

Paint damage (belt buckle/zipper as he dove in)

Wow - there is all kinds of stuff in here that I have questions about
- All that labor under Hood, Electrical and Restraint systems seems bogus
- The diagnostics, I get it they need to do these but that adds up to almost 5 hours of running scans before/during/after!

I hope Rivian gets these under control before the warranties are up because it makes it VERY hard to argue that this is a good investment when repair prices are the same as exotics.

On the one hand, this constant publicity on egregious repair costs is just going to feed the EV-nay sayers.

On the other hand, this constant publicity on EV-vandalizers getting caught is discouraging future vandalizers.

I for myself have at least 4 videos of male reproductive organs making friends with my R1T in the form of urination. Unfortunately, the police don’t care about this (for good reasons as they’re too busy).

Sometimes I think ignorance is bliss. I’m a sure my X7 gets pissed on all the time but I don’t know because it doesn’t have cameras.

Actually the X7 can be remoted in from the App to view the cameras. Unfortunately the Rivian tech is so far behind it will be 10 years before this feature is offered.

Very sorry to hear about the incident, and even sorrier to learn that it was in Fairmount Park no less. As others have already well-noted, the repair estimate from Rivian seems ridiculously high and hopefully, the actual repairs will wind up being more reasonable.

As to police follow-up, I wish you the best, but know that the Philadelphia PD is hopelessly overwhelmed at present. As much as the department may want to help with the many property crimes in the city, they are so short of resources (mostly officers), that they essentially triage their work. Unsurprisingly, property crime is not particularly high on the list. It's also not very helpful that the DA's office is not merely similarly understaffed but also that its working relationship with the PPD is toxic.

The cause of the police problem is simple: Experienced officers are leaving the PPD much faster than they they can be replaced. As of late 2022, the department reported that they were short over 1,200 officers. That shortfall likely grew in 2023, as more than 300 officers left and only something like 150 new officers were sworn in. The new mayor has made the personnel problem a priority, but it will take quite a bit of time to rectify things. None of this is meant to be an excuse, and it's certainly not very comforting for folks like you who have experienced its effects, but that's what you're up against. While the police personnel shortage is not unique to Philly, its impact on the quality of life in the city is greater than it may be elsewhere.
