My complaint would be the lack of useful information on timing. I was asking my guide, daily, for an estimate on when I would be able to schedule delivery (had been assigned a VIN) and was told "probably a few weeks". Then the next morning I get a text message saying they want to deliver to my home the NEXT day. I was happy to accept delivery... But it would be nice if they'd provide a little more accurate info on where the truck is so the timeline isn't a total roll of the dice for the customer.

The rest of the 8 steps were all easy and quick. Easily the lowest-stress buying experience I've ever had. It was wonderful being able to do it at my convenience, and even on a phone.

I like his branding of CY/FE as spinach omelette at least
How many CY/FE fanboys are in the crowd today? That is a combo I just can't quite stand behind. The marketing of spinach omelette is great though.

You all have to understand that folks from motortrend are usually quite pampered by automakers (used to have a friend that worked there a while ago). So to him, this was probably unacceptable. And honestly, he's right. My last two auto purchases took less than 2 hours from start to finish. I'm guessing the Rivian purchase will take WAY more of my time than that, but we'll see. Hopefully my experience is smoother than his. And by that time I'll be so damn excited I won't care anyways...

I'm mid-purchase process right now (*knocks on wood*) and the only similar issue I had was my trade-in value being low. With that said, I don't believe Rivian is valuing the trade. I think its a third-party partner so I can't really blame Rivian for that. Plus, Carvana and Vroom offered similar low prices. I ended up selling my car to CarMax.

I went with Rivian's insurance because it was far cheaper for similar coverage than my current insurance and I was able to bump up and get more coverage and features for the same price I would have paid with Progressive. I definitely did not have to go with Rivian's offering however.

Overall it has been a very smooth process. Even payment was easy and Step 8 was completed for me after I received a text message from the service center asking me if a certain date/time would work for me. Now I'm just patiently waiting for my delivery date to get here.

The only PITA I had with the 8-step was Rivian requiring me to present an insurance card with the R1Ts VIN. Not knowing the actually delivery date made that kinda hard. It wasn’t clear to me that I could skip that step & still unlock the remaining steps. Once I had a firm-ish delivery date I was able to get my insurance company to spit out a post-dated insurance card w/VIN.
In the states I’ve lived in, showing “proof of auto insurance” was sufficient; the new vehicle did not already have to be on the policy at delivery.

It won't. Took me about 20 minutes to get through steps 1-6. This guy is just a lazy idiot. Rivian sends an email ahead of time, linking to a buying checklist that answers most if not all questions.

He didn't mention this email and (wild guess) didn't bother to read it either. He just sat on his ass and waited for his guide to spoon-feed him everything, then got mad when reality didn't align to his expectations and cried about it in a public forum.

Almost all of my other car purchases have been with dealers and have consumed a ridiculous amount of time and energy. I bought one car once through a broker that was pretty seamless but this experience so far is tied for first place. (Ask me again once I actually take delivery.)

Doesn’t Rivian ship a mobile 220V charger with the truck? Why wasn’t he able to charge with the home charger set up?

For sure he could've charged with the 110V adapter, but if he hardwired the Rivian Home Charger (only way to get the full 48A) then he probably didn't have access to a NEMA 14-50 outlet to use the mobile 220V adapter.

I guess I am not surprised at some of the childish comments this is the internet.

I will say I struggled to get through the steps. Specifically it was unclear that the steps don’t need to be done in order, and bringing my own financing was also not clear regarding acquiring the documentation needed by both Rivian and the Bank.
My guide was not as helpful as he could be.
It got done but smooth it was not.

I didn't consider that. Thanks!

So, I have to say that this article very much annoyed me. I found the author to be incredibly entitled and much of his complaining is due to his not getting his way, when he wanted it.

Does Rivian's process need refining? Yes. Have others experienced much worse than this and written a fraction of the diatribe? Most definitely.

Does this guy even read the forums to appreciate some of the frustrations people have experienced?

Also, it sounds as if he got special treatment here by getting a guide even before he had a delivery window and he got his truck probably well before he should have - so the fact that he is complaining so loudly is priceless.

Also, he has the audacity to reference Ford. Has he not seen what Ford dealers have been doing to Lightning reservation holders, marking up their trucks by double?

This dude needs a reality check.

Edit: Admin thank you for moving my thread, I did not see this one.

Nowhere does he mention in his pout fest that he jumped 70k other orders.

Omg I had to spend an hour at home drinking a beer while filling out my paperwork! [Insert eye roll emoji]

Agreed, and I gave this feedback to my Guide.

Surprised to read about so many people on this forum are upset someone wrote something critical about the buying process. It sounds like it can be improved. There have been several posts of buyers on this forum with their own questions about the 8 step process.

So... you were told you'd get the keys to an $85,000 truck a full month in advance and thought, well, I guess they'll just hand it over without paying for it? Then got mad because you hadn't given any thought to how you were going to pay for it? Got it.
Amazing...isn't it

Nobody is saying it’s perfect. It took me 20 minutes to complete the steps but that was 2 years after my initial deposit LOL. Not exactly seamless. This just came across as insanely entitled and it also seems like he can’t/won’t read the instructions provided. I’m sure it’ll generate clicks through so everyone wins.
