Wait is it a "launch edition" or adventure? I heard that all LE are 2022. Something is not making sense here.

It’s an adventure, not a launch edition.

Thanks to everyone for your input. I was definitely leaning towards requesting a ā€˜23 VIN but seeing these posts, I know I’m not being too picky by doing that.

It is a little frustrating that Rivian seemingly just tried to pass this one through assuming (hoping) it wouldn’t be caught. I know new cars lose value once you drive them off the lot, but this one has already lost value by being a year old, yet purchased at full msrp for a 2023.

UPDATE

Spoke with a guide on Monday, who apologized for matching me with a 2022 build and that it was a very unusual situation. They would remove the vehicle from my account and said they'd get me access to the shop right away to secure another vehicle. Later on Monday the vehicle is removed and they're processing the estimate as to when I will get the new vehicle.

Tuesday comes and lo and behold, I'm matched to the same 2022 vehicle again and it is in my account with requests to complete the purchase. Reach out to a guide (a new one this time) who apologizes and said she spoke with her team and that the mistake is fixed and it won't happen again. Vehicle is removed from the account by Wednesday morning and I'm back in line waiting for an estimate as to when I'll get access to the shop.

Wednesday evening, unsurprisingly, I'm matched AGAIN to the same 2022 VIN. Reached out this morning to the guide demanding a phone call, who says that that isn't necessary and that they'll get right on fixing this. The solution is that I'm "unmatched" again, but would I consider a different configuration (color or wheel type). I said no and that I would purchase the 2022 if it was discounted, but am told, no, they won't do that and that they'll work on getting me a 2023.

Seriously considering cancelling the order and demanding my deposit back at this point. This doesn't seem to be overly complicated and raises serious questions on my end about how customer service will be going forward if they can't even process a simple order for a nearly $100k vehicle.

Seems like they were attempting to make good on it for you. But yeah you show them and cancel because I'm sure if you were running things my Rivian stock would be 3-4x what it is now

WHAT?

PLEASE explain to me how the Riv team was trying to, "..make good on it for you.", by trying to sell the OP a vehicle that is almost 2 years old with no discount, three times. That does not take into account the car value which is already lowered due to it being that old.

I too would be reconsidering my purchase plans if I were the OP. Heck, I did when the first T I was to take delivery of, had many issues, and I rejected it.

So OP do what's in your best interest!!

Agreed, ā€œstrike three,ā€ā€™and you’re out - if it were me. Good luck. ?

Yeah, not really seeing how they were attempting to make good on it for me. They assured me on two separate occasions that it was a ā€œglitchā€ and wouldn’t happen again…and then it did. Now, I’m being told it is going to take a few business days just to unmatch me from the VIN.

Frankly, I would have just taken the 2022 if they were having such a hard time, but I would have expected some type of discount being that the vehicle is a year old, but they flat out refused.

Making good on it would have been to offer a discount, being that it was an older vehicle, not asking me to pick a different color so that they would stop running into the very issue that they created. That, coupled with the refusal to simply speak on the phone, is what I find the most disturbing.

If I choose to cancel, it isn’t me trying to ā€œshow themā€, as I know at the end of the day whatever choice I make will have no impact whatsoever on Rivian. If I were to cancel, it would simply be because as a consumer, I have lost confidence in a brand and their ability to provide effective customer service.

I totally agree that a 2022 truck in Q3 of 2023 is bs. But being that you are on the forum it’s common knowledge that customer service is erratic. I hope it works out for you as I still enjoy mine after 18 months and 28k miles. Best wishes

That's interesting, especially since I didn't even choose from the shop. I just received a text from the service center that my truck was there. I purposely "built" the quad motor and didn't select from the ready to go versions in the hopes that I would get one recently off the line.

I've read there's some benefits to the older ones (better sound system, 12 volt in the frunk), so I'll see what the guide has to say and will take it from there.
We picked our R1T up in Nov. 22. When I was given the Vin, I’d guessed it was built in June…asked my guide, no just finished production? We took delivery and have had less issues than a friend’s who’s build was 6 months newer, and as you stated, we have powered tonneau (still working like day 1), 12 v outlets, etc etc that they have since removed or cheapened.

That’s just crazy! How are they rematching you to the same vehicle.

I was unmatched from a low VIN LE in May and then given shop access where I picked up another LE R1S with a more recent VIN. Though it wasn’t the latest during that time, it was still better than the first one.

As much as local new car dealers suck, none of them would try to pull this - you can see the window sticker. Rivian is not giving fair disclosure and it’s borderline unethical in my opinion.
GM still has 2022 Hummer EV ED1s sitting on a lot they haven't sold yet because of the battery sealing recall. No way any of those buyers will be getting a discount.

I bought mine in January 2023 and it is a 2022.

Really do not care, it is pretty much the same vehicle they are building in 2023.

Unless you plan to sale it soon the mileage difference between the model years will somewhat balance the value of the vehicles.

You can run numbers through KBB, an example of identical Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland with 60k miles for 2017 or 2018 is around $500.

If Rivian is still sitting on 2022's they should consider just keeping them and turning them into loaners and/or sell them to a fleet operator (commercial or rental car chain) at a slight discount to clear up the shop and prevent this problem from occurring for retail customers.

Ordered a Quad R1T in El Cap with Ocean Coast about a month ago and I'm in the process of finalizing the 8 step process, though when I put the VIN through my insurance, it came out as a 2022 model.
I light of the circumstances & lack of disclosure and the fact that you are paying with the current price structure I would want a 2023 model on principle alone.
I’ve gone back and forth in my mind with my Dual/Max pre-order and potentially switching to Quad/Large, especially after the warranty change, but I just can’t get comfortable with the Shop vehicles for this very reason - no VIN’s, no build dates. You don’t get really relevant info until after you’ve gone pretty deep into the purchase process.
I am having an equally hard time with the reconfiguring of the max., the carrot is getting awfully shrivelled at this point. Once we finally get some specs I will decide which way to go. I would be fine with a 2022 quad if thats the route I go. The pricing for the LE in the shop is looking more & more attractive.

I don't think that applies to the R1S however as my LE is a 2023.

So I picked up my exact build, but an LE in the shop last night.... 88xx vin. Really disappointed. I have texted my guide, but I haven't heard back yet.

Can I actually refuse this vin and be put back in the shop? It appears OP was able to go back to the shop.
