Better odds for 2023...refreshed model 3 or Cybertruck?
The refresh 3 will happen before CyberTruck for one reason. They already have the 3 production line in place.

Yeah I was going to mention this as well. OP might just hang in there a bit longer, I don’t think it’s far off.

I have a X Plaid that I’ll likely get rid of for the new 3 now that I have my R1T. Tesla is hard to beat on efficiency and charging network. But I’m digging the R1 a lot, so it may be the best if both worlds with a 3 and R1
Tell us more about your R1T experience, @uthatch, now that you have had it for a few days!

I don't know if this is the right spot for a review, but yeah, I'm liking the truck a lot. I hate the charging networks a lot too.

As for the R1T, I do like the traditional stalks and operation of the vehicle. I wound't mind if it had a yoke, but the rest I really like. I enjoy how it drives, the steering is light making it feel nimble. It's very comfortable, I love the look of the interior and exterior both. The motor whine was surprising but I like that as well. As I mentioned, I have some wind noise, but I scheduled a service appointment and it's really not too bad anyway. I dig all the weird accessories like the flashlight, camp speaker, and air compressor. I'd be willing to bet a LOT of those items go away in the next year or so and/or become optional. I'm averaging 2.0 on my commute to work.

The Driver+ is not up to par compared to Tesla AP. Initially I thought it was but after more use I can see a lot of limitations and inconsistencies. It doesn't hold the center as well, it doesn't read the lanes as well, and it disengages a lot. I monitor it much, much more than I do AP and I feel like I monitor AP plenty. Over probably half of my commute Driver+ will not work. But cruise control still does so it's not the end of the world.

Aside from the wind noise everything else seems solid, no issues. I don't love the feel of the steering wheel, particularly the bottom spoke. The plastic hard edges meet there and it's pretty rough. And I'm very tender and sensitive. ?

The charging networks are horrendous. I'm really hoping I just got off on the wrong foot and hit a couple bad ones. But so far charging has not been good at all. Broken stalls, truck got confused and wouldn't charge until I reset it, waiting for people to charge, wrestling the CCS cable. I don't like any of that.

Anyone who doesn’t think that the Tesla Supercharging network, cable, and plug is light years ahead of CCS needs their head examined. Meaning all the politicians that are forcing CCS on us need their heads examined. It's not even in the same universe when it comes to ease of use. I am aware that all of this will improve in time.

And that's about the shape of it at 500 miles in!

The motor whine was surprising but I like that as well. Yep, yep. As I mentioned, I have some wind noise, but I scheduled a service appointment and it's really not too bad anyway. I dig all the weird accessories like the flashlight, camp speaker, and air compressor. I found the camp speaker crazy good quality. Yeah, Sandy Munro will have them strip all of this "s00n". I'd be willing to bet a LOT of those items go away in the next year or so and/or become optional. Thanks for Sandy "cheapen" Munro". I'm averaging 2.0 on my commute to work.

It doesn't hold the center as well, it doesn't read the lanes as well, and it disengages a lot. Yeah, early stages, Like Tesla was back in the day. And I'm very tender and sensitive. Don't have that problem. Have the SC address along with the wind. Confirm location for SC in advance, using that painter's tape trick. ?

Up here, no issues with Walmart EA charging stations (working, wise)

Having owned both Model 3 an Y, in my opinion its a fun car. ..it was a blast to drive. Much prefer that to the Model Y, which I find boring, but don’t tell that to my wife.
Yeah, that's pretty much is my opinion regarding the M3 and MY as well. The M3 is much more fun to drive than the MY which is just "big".

Yep, I plan to tinker with the painters tape this weekend. It sounds like it’s coming from higher up than the quarter window so maybe the windshield edge.

And yeah, I’m thinking charging station brands are probably geo-dependent. It seems, from very very early on, that maybe EVGo might be slightly better down here. But I just rolled up to a Target and am writing this sitting at an EA station that’s delivering 148kW perfectly fine. So maybe I just got off on the wrong foot. At least the charging is cheaper than most Tesla SC’s down here.

Annnnd as I write the above, my charging is down to 116kW at 67% SOC. I hope it doesn’t drop much more before 85%.

Our 2013 Model S would have been been drawing about 40KW or less at 67% SOC depending on temps.

We charged at an EA station once so far in our R1T just to try it but were around 85% SOC and drawing about 50KW. I thought that was pretty good compared to our old Tesla.

My past experience with our Model S would say it’s not worth trying to fast charge much above 60% unless you absolutely have to. But I have been in the “absolutely have to” situation many times and it’s frustrating. Things have gotten quite a bit better over the last 6+ years as the charging infrastructure has improved though. It’s the primary reason I REALLY wanted the max pack, but I got tired of waiting. And so far the large pack has surprised me with the real world range in conserve mode.

Yep, I understand the sentiment. During my charging today the ramp did slow down charging but not to unbearable amount. At 85% I was at 50 kW, so not terrible.

Yeah I got tired of waiting too for the Max pack so pulled the trigger. I’m totally happy with the range at the moment overall. Sounds like our experiences are similar.

Im considering a 2700 mile road trip in April in the R1T and I’m still on the fence. I’m going to use a lot of DC chargers between now and then to build my confidence in the charging systems. My first couple experiences have not been good. I’m used to Tesla and I guess that spoiled me.

That would be a lot of fun if I was solo and I’d love to hear about your experience. I think 2700mi might challenge my patience if I had my whole family.

I’m on the fence for taking the truck on a 600mi trip (each way) to Summit County, CO to ski in March. And that’s with a guaranteed overnight in Denver or further east on I70 before we head up the mountains. I don’t have much confidence in the non-Tesla fast charging infrastructure on the I70 corridor based on what I have read/heard from others. I love adventure but I still only have a limited amount of patience. Plus I’d rather spend the time with my 12yr old on the slopes than charging in Frisco, or Denver, or Lamar, etc…

A refreshed Model 3 will be debuting this year.
Project highland based M3s may actually be coming soon. March 1st announcement and then hopefully quick rollout.
it would be ideal to catch the new M3 with the tax rebate.

Just a different perspective for you. Be careful to take everything you read on forums as gospel. They tend to be overly biased towards the negative and not really how things are. I’m not saying everything is rosy but not all gloom and doom we are reading.

I had a slight hesitation on doing a factory pickup and driving home to CA. Since I was east of the Mississippi, decided to go to Boston, then down to Florida before heading home to SoCal. 5k miles, 23 states, 33 EA chargers, no issues (one exception in Pensacola they were working on the stations but I was still able to charge).

I’m just saying, get out there and see for yourself how things are before throwing in the towel.

I had a great 17 day trip that for a hot minute almost did not happen before I decided the worst that could happen is the truck gets towed to a service center and I take a cab to the airport.

No more anger for me toward Rivian, but after a long wait and the fact that they do not have a good plan to deliver vehicles in my area, I have decided to get a Model 3 and an inexpensive ICE truck for hardware store and hunting trips.... I am comfortable with this and I am not mad at Rivian.... Here is why I think it is the right decision for me; note that I am not saying it is right for everyone....

1- The M3 will cost <$40K since I will get it in time to qualify for the full tax credit.. I will be a truck for about $10K so even with both I will be at <$50K compared to $75K for the Rivian
2- The operating cost for a daily driver will be much less.
3- The charging network is awesome... My wife already has a model Y
4- Tesla is stable and established... I tend to keep vehicle a long time so long term viability is important...

Your fellow adventurer,
jphillips97
Only thing you will miss is the Awe you get from fellow drivers when you drive to a club or party.
The feeling is awesome.
