I haven't had the squeaking happen (yet) on my R1S, but your description reminds of the exact problem I had on my 2017 Tesla Model S. I took it to the Tesla service center who told me that the squeak was most likely caused by a little dust in the folding mechanism. They said it was a pretty common issue they see as result of shipping the cars across the country on trains and trucks. They squirted some silicone lubricant in between the parts that move against each other and sent me on my way. They advised me to reapply if the squeak comes back. Sure enough a couple of months later, the squeak came back as the dust particles worked their way out. I squirted some more silicone lubricant in there and it has been squeak free now for the past 6.5 years after that second application.

The one thing that the service center emphasized to me was to use a silicone spray lubricant, not something oil-based like WD40 that would damage the paint or the mechanical parts inside the mirror assembly.

Lube would probably help but my concern is that the mirrors weren't installed properly. In the pictures you can see that there is plastic on plastic contact (rubbing). I would think that this would put additional pressure on the mirror motors and could couse premature failure. I wonder if there was supposed ot be a spacer installed. The spacer would lift up the mirror at bit so it wouldn't make contact with the base. That's why I was wondering if others see the scrape marks on their SUV/trucks.

…do you NEED to fold them, like for garage clearance?

Mine does this as well and causes door to squeak when opening and closing. I have similar wear marks on mirrors, which really shouldn’t be normal. I showered it to the SC and they said all their vehicles have the issue so it’s a design flaw. I tried some dry silicone spray and it didn’t really help.

Yes I NEED to fold them. It’s a built in feature of the vehicle and if I decide that I NEED it for something then it should function.
I was attempting to find out if others have the same experience as I do.
