Personally I think RJ and team will deliver on their promises of $45k and 300 min of range. Sure, to sell cars, make profit yadda yadda yadda. What will propel Rivian into the future, hopefully a very long future is delivering on what was promised and gaining more mainstream brand recognition. At the end of the day, after all the bills are paid, if they even turn just one dollar in profit, that’s a success. Sure, stock holders might freak out, I’ve never been fond of stock holders anyway. They always do what’s best for their pockets, not what is good for the company.

I digress. Brand recognition and delivering builds customer loyalty.

$45k and 300 mi range would destroy sales on the R1 Standard. Sure they could do it and sell more R2. If they did it, also expect cancellation of R1 Standard.

I would expect the lower R1 trims to naturally go away once R2 is released. The R1 was always supposed to be a halo vehicle, makes more sense to lower their R1 build numbers and focus on the higher level trim R1s where the margins are higher and use the extra capacity freed up for the R2 builds.

Yup. They can cancel it regardless. But even more likely to do so if a $45k 300 mi R2 existed. No one in their right mind, then, would pay what R1 Standard goes for even if they needed a big car.

Without stockholders Rivian wouldn’t have had the billions needed to sustain the losses.

I’d still take a R1S standard and I wager there are others who would. Even at current prices the value is excellent compared to x7 and gls. The q7 and 8 aren’t even worth mentioning. There is no replacement for size difference. I’d also get a R2 to replace my wife’s car.

IMO it should go away. Like you said, could move the R1 to a more dedicated flagship and allow more room in pricing between the R2 and R1 models. Not sure what percentage of sales the standard is for the R1, so I guess that would be more of the deciding factor for Rivian here.

Rivian R1T R1S Starting from $45K Wording Removed from R2 Website đź‘€ 1773242162541-2y

FYI... The "starting at $45,000" was not completely removed from the website. If you hover over the R2 label at the top of the website, you get the above which you can see in the top right still says starting at $45,000.

Apologies if this has already been said. If so, I must have missed it.

Leasing Model 3 until R3X comes out, but now I have an R2 reservation as well.
It is 265miles.
Close to what was predicted by MKBHD back in 2024. He said 270. The RWD with 345 miles will be $49,990. Pay $5,000 and go 80 more miles. The real world range will be less for both. Probably 220 and 295. Depends on a lot of factors (tires, wind, temperature, etc.)

Yes I recall back then saying 270 and 330 were the ranges and pretty close on the money.

I don’t think they’ll have many takers for the $45K model. Most people want range at a reasonable price in a form factor that they prefer. Makes me wonder if the $45K model will be even more decontented then the $50K RWD?

Well the battery could be 20kWh smaller which equates to at least $2000 in battery costs. So we will se what, if any, decontenting there is.

Given what leaked today... now we can add numbers to the equation.

R1S starts at $76,900 with 270 mi of range.
R2 LE, $57,990, has 330 mi
R2 Premium, $53,990, also 330 mi
R2 RWD, $48,490, has 345 mi
R2 Standard, $45k, 265 mi

Understatement to say the math is pretty poor on the new R1S Standard. And the few buyers who don't care about range, but want more space... are there enough of them to build a business case and justify the manufacturing cost? For these potential customers, they are not without options: pre-owned and lease returned R1S.

Ya not a good business decision to keep the R1 standards around. The math for buyers that it works for is great, I have never felt in want of more range, and Massachusetts gives an upfront $7500 check in the mail when you buy/lease a lot of configurations of standard. The math for Rivian probably not so much. I assume they’ll cancel the T standard too.

Aw well, knew the Mass rebate was too good of a thing to work forever on the R1s. What blows my mind is that they offer $15k on the Chevy Silverado EV and the sibling cadillac
