Tailgate bumper gap - Normal?

I never noticed the huge gap below the tailgate until I took an eye-level picture after wrapping my silver bumper black.

1. Is this normal?

2. Has anyone done anything to conceal it (i.e., thick rubber foam)?

3. Should I even care (I do notice it all the time now!)?

Yes its normal. I have seen some variation between models but they have to have a significant gap there otherwise the small tailgate will contact the bumper when its opened.

Design of split tailgates to avoid rubbing on the bumper. Well worth it to get the spilt tailgate design.

Now that I've noticed it I can't unsee it! If the interior silver visible was painted black I think it would be fine. Probably going to get some thick black rubber foam to fill the gap - hoping that's visually appealing without affecting functionality.
