I’m still a relative EV newbie and am leaving northern Utah next week and headed to Texas. ABRP suggests going south to I-70 and then clear over to Wichita KS before going any farther south. That adds a pile of miles for more charger availability. (Which is understandable). However, for fun I would like to maybe try the new RAN station in Salida CO and take a shorter route. But any of those short cut paths that take a more straight shot look like some real elevation and possibly snowy sections and then some pretty sparse charging options. (So I’m kinda looking for suggestions for a shorter route through Albuquerque or similar routing…. That people have experience with). So bottom line is if maybe if I found a good hotel with reliable charging in a spot or two I might get brave enough to give it a go… even with so many fewer DCFC options. Love any feedback from anyone that has driven an EV down through those parts.

I don’t have an EV yet but have looked at driving my s00n to be Rivian out from north Texas to New Mexico and Colorado. The problem is most of west Tx and NM are charging deserts. Just looking at plugshare, I think a more direct route may be possible using hotel charging but could get very tight on the second half of your trip.

Looks that way to me too. Thanks for the feedback.

Let me say I don't have any real world road trip EV experience, I have only had my R1T a few weeks. I would not trust hotel charging at all. Not only may the chargers be broken, but someone else may be using them also. Could be plug in hybrids thats the owners parked and left plugged in, so they can get additional mileage. Maybe some hotels will let you reserve a charger ahead of time, or maybe instead of a hotel you can find a VRBO/Airbnb with a charger. I would view hotel charging as a bonus, not a key point of my trip.
