Yeah, but which legacy OEM has the billions of dollars worth of compute that will allow them to even keep their head above water? And where will they get the billions of miles of real world driving data?
That is spot on. You have to invest a fortune in this space to have any hope of achieving FSD. Rivian just doesn’t have the R&D budget to keep up. Plenty of other automakers don’t either. Tesla can’t do robotaxis yet, but they have cars that can do about 99% of your driving for you. That is pretty amazing.

I can say for a fact that GM does. Through both it’s Cruise unit and the team behind their Super Cruise systems.

Now I’m not sayin’ that data is actually ‘good’ but they’ve got it.

I got a look at some of their processes a while back when they were considering a VDI environment to expedite the process they teach the machine learning systems. At the time, they wanted a virtual desktop spun up that could be attached to a container with the self driving data. A team member could look at the decisions being made and make corrections. Then check the container back in and get another one. I’m not sure what happened to that project since I rolled off that account when we were getting to the PoC part.

Waymo sensor and camera suite costs $150K+ and only works on prescanned roads. It's a possible robotaxi competitor but it's a long way off from being economically viable for normal vehicles on sale to consumers at a normal price point.
