The third row fans just circulate cabin air. They are not ducted to heat or cooling air from the climate control system.
Did you read my comment? How is it recirculating cabin air if it is blowing air at 50F from the rear vents after the heat has been going on HI for 20 min? Surely after that amount of time it would be blowing at least lukewarm air!

Did you read the thread? It can also do cooling air.

I understand this for Gen1 - where there's separate resistive heating elements for heating AFIAK - for gen2 it would be interesting to see the duct/heat exchanger layout - as this would be a pretty interesting design to only support active cooling.

I do wonder if they are using `cooling` to refer to the effect that moving cabin temp air has (ie increased convective transfer), but then it would seem odd to call out cabin temp air. Alternatively there must be a plenum/active blend doors somewhere to redirect the air source for the rear vents depending on if cooling or `heating` - but that seems unlikely..

There's a reason Rivian put heated seats in the third row for gen2. If I remember correctly, the rear vents are actually pulling air from behind the third row. It's going to take a long time for that air to get warm.

Same note for Gen 2...

The portion saying you need a passenger in the third row is old and no longer applies. I use the vents all of the time with the third row folded to keep air circulating in the back for the pups. It changed when they added the third row tab on the HVAC screen.

Yeah - I checked that as well to see if different. Honestly I think it’s creative phrasing from Rivian - our rear vents in our R1S don’t appear to be connected to the HVAC in any way and just recirculate cabin air. Folks that have installed a new subwoofer should probably be able to answer authoritatively what the ducting looks like behind the panel.

that makes sense. thanks for clarifying. yet another completely baffling design decision

When heating is turned on, the front two rows turn on the heat mode, but the rear mode while turning on goes to 'COLD' mode and cold air comes from the third row. This happens even when the temperature nis set to high heat. Please view the short video.
When checked with Rivian support, they said the there is no heating PTC pump in the rear and hence the third row doesn't turn on heat and it has to heat up from the middle row vent. The explanation seemed to be silly, when this feature is there for almost every 3 row vehicles! If the third row does have to take the heating from front, at least the software should not enable the COLD mode there.
Please share your comments if this is a known issue for R1S.

The third row has vents that only blow cabin air. It's best to leave them off in cold weather. I do not understand what auto mode means for the third row vents. The third row seats do have heaters that you can turn on. You might want blankets for extreme cold weather.
