Alright, I don't even have the car yet, but I ordered the Thule Allax dog crate. I've taken test drives of the R2 and measured the interior, and others have too, so it will theoretically fit with 1.5" to spare width-wise, and 2" height-wise. Adjustable depth should make it fine for the seat backs to hatch.

I'm going to report back on this thread once it arrives and once I actually get the car, with photos/videos. I'm also planning on getting tie down points installed at a local shop.

Hopefully this will help someone in the future. I haven't found any information on this, so maybe I'm the first to post.

Some reasons I'm going with the Thule Allax over something like a Variocage, Gunner, etc:
  • I really like how it looks. Honestly this is the big one. Though you can make the argument that the Variocage's brand orange might be more on brand for a Rivian.
  • The doors are dampened. My dog is sensitive as heck, and will never forget anything that startles her. Her world is a bit scary, but she manages really well and we work hard on that, but anything to reduce something kind of scary would be helpful.
  • Like the other options, it's crash tested. It has a pretty good test it passed (TÜV SÜD certification).
  • Thule instructions seem to be better than Variocage
  • Less rattling and troubleshooting than Variocage. I know with enough added padding and fiddling with screws/latches, you can make a variocage silent, but the Thule comes pretty much silent out of the box.
  • More airflow
  • Free returns. 4x4northamerica, which is the distributor of the variocage in the U.S., has very stingy return policies. You have to go through a process to get a size verification, and once you do, they will only take a return if it doesn't fit. But they won't take returns otherwise. Thule, for this crate, has a 30 day, no frills, free return (including shipping)
  • This thule allax double L fits really well to maximize the space. It's unfortunate my dog is too big to fit in the single with the depth stuck at 36", but with the double being so big, if I don't have my dog, the crate can hold a bunch of stuff and be locked with a key.
Alright, the crate and car should be in hand by September 1. Photos and maybe a video then!

Let me know if you have a dog crate or plan to have one and what you're going with!
