Tip when updating vehicle software: eject/disconnect your gear guard/storage external/usb-c drive first

I have done this from the beginning. I don't seem to experience many or any of the software issues commonly discussed on this forum.

As an it guy, this is something we do as sop on many different devices.

I too am an "IT Guy" and I work for my wife. Sounds like good advice! I now just need to keep my wife from pressing the "Update Now" button on her phone until I can get out to Rosey and pull the SSD.

I don't bother doing this, and most probably don't, and can say the same about not experiencing most of the software issues commonly discussed. And most of the reported problems are bugs fixed with software updates that have nothing to do with whether external storage is connected or not.

I won't be wasting my time with this procedure during future Rivian updates. I also don't disconnect usb storage, mice, keyboards, web cams, RJ45 adapters, monitors or any other usb/thunderbolt accessories when I upgrade or reboot my computers.

fair. the step is not listed in the manual either. Rivian probably has a provision to deal with the drive during updates.

Let's not confuse people further.

Leaving a storage device plugged in is not going to cause issues with their updates. That's not how software works.

I also have a degree in computer science and the pro tip escapes me. Unless the Rivian uses the external storage to buffer the update, there's no reason. Android targets the data or cache partition and not even the sdcard0 internal storage like it used to. So I think we are safe to leave it in.

However, I recently had a PC that blue screened on a windows update constantly and was completely bricked until I removed a wacky USB to HDMI converter. Thereafter the PC booted successfully and completed the update. So anything is possible.

As most of you know, I like to live life dangerously. I procured (stole) said drive from the mrs. I left my usb-c in since the first week of purchase, last year. Well, it's fried. The drive is toast. Let this be a lesson to those of you trying to emulate my debonair and dangerous lifestyle! Also, stealing things from your wife will get you bad karma.

Have never removed usb or changed gear guard settings and all updates have since mid 2022 performed flawlessly

I close my eyes when I press the install button. So far no update issues.

Many, many moons ago you could get into the BIOS at startup and force a boot from an external source, bypassing the hard disk...maybe this is a vestige of that train of thought?

While unlikely, I guess it's also possible, as part of the update, it finds and verifies the external gear guard storage and, maybe? if that hits an error?, the error handling is not particularly elegant? resulting in some other issue?

Maybe, possibly?? While I'm confident removing it won't cause issues, alas, I am too lazy to get off my butt when my phone says I can update.
