Sidewall damage from a nasty curbing. Just discovered on the eve of a 200 mile drive with the family. Argh. What would you do?

You can see the cords in the tire. You need to get it replaced ASAP. I wouldn't drive it on the highway for 200 miles.

Holy moly! You're lucky you didn't get a blowout!

Change it immediately, put on a spare if you have one, that's an accident waiting to happen.

Reason #3 not to get 21s...
What are reasons #1 and #2?

Sorry this happened! If you can see cords it’s no longer safe.

That looks dead-in-the-water. Sorry for your loss.

Ha! 21"s are fine. Don't let the 20"s peer-pressure you.

Well yeah, 21" are fine unless you need to replace one. Then, it really depends on where you are whether you can get one replaced the same day or whether you have to wait a week while the local shop gets one shipped in.

In this case, the OP needs a replacement before a trip the next day. That can only be done in certain locations, but not in most places.

I had something similar within the first few weeks of ownership. It looked like shrapnel. Took to Discount Tire right away and got a temp tyre for a day and then they replaced it the next day. I did get a nail a few weeks later in the same tyre. 20" AT btw. I would definitely get it replaced.
