I may be a fool, but I'm also a natural saver and I was fortunate to marry someone that has the same mindset.
I grew up dirt poor and my one goal in life was to not live how I grew up. Between what I've saved and the ESOP I received from working a job I hated but stayed at for their retirement I've done well. Not Southern California well but PNW well.
With my various 401k's, HSA and brokerage accounts I spend time researching and investing. I don't know the specifics on the rate of returns but I'm happy with it.
ESOP being private stock I didn't control the variables until I started exercising it. That account is the bulk of my retirement funds. Only being able to move it once a year and having my last distribution pending in a shortened time frame caused a little stress.
My original post and the reason for my question was strictly to find out if anyone had some good information that I may have missed out doing my own research.
Next year I'm going to offer my employer the option of retaining me part time or my resignation. My wife is younger than I, she will continue to work for the health insurance.
