My R1S will be sitting in the garage on the Rivian wall mount charger. Which by the way keeps shutting down making my neighbor go by and re-plug which starts it. this is four times that it has happened.

Anyway, I got the update notice. If I get the car charging again, would you risk applying the update unattended? And if I don't apply the update and more are issued are the cumulative or will I need to install each?

I’ve initiated most of my updates from the app while I’m either in my office or at home, and my truck was not plugged in for probably half of them. So I wouldn’t worry about that. As long as your truck has a good Wi-Fi or LTE connection it will work just fine.

There was a botched update last year that was the result of Rivian pushing out the wrong version, causing some trouble for the first batch of updates installed. I doubt that will happen again but it is possible. That was not a result of how the update was installed though - it would have played out the same whether those vehicles were plugged in or not, attended or not.

As long as the truck is at home I’d update while away. I won’t update if the truck is in another location.

I did this update when I was parked at the county fair on Friday. Came out to an updated R1T! I have also updated while on a road trip and after I parked at the St. Patrick's Day festival. Whether at home or away anywhere, it takes about an hour so just be patient and go enjoy life while it's doing its thing.

I only do updates when my truck is at home in my driveway. Not that I expect anything to go wrong, but just in case it does. That does not mean I am at home myself when I do the update.

One time I had an update available, but it was going in for service in a week, so I skipped the update so they could troubleshoot the truck with the same software the truck had when it had a problem, just in case it was software related. Service did the update before sending it home to me.

I updated while at our vacation home the morning of our departure, 150 miles down the road I stopped to charge, and it wouldn't complete the handhsake, I reset the infotainment, then the whole truck no help, called support, they had no ideas.

I moved from a 200kw charger to a 60kw charger and to my surprise it worked, so I thought it was the chargers, got 50 miles range, drove to the next stop that was available, and again it wouldn't handshake.

at this point I had 15 miles range, so if I couldn't get this to work, I would be waiting on a truck to tow/ charge me. I called support again, they advised full reset for the 2nd time, and that did the trick.

Would this have happened had I updated at home, yes, would I have known, probably not, this is not a great example of what can go wrong, but it is an example. It scared me enough to never do it again, more than it scared me, it pissed off my wife, like BIG MAD............so never again LOL.

Yea never do those updates while on the road. It's not worth the risk and it will brick itself for the silliest of reasons. This isn't a Toyota you can drive through the Sahara worry free. The other day my rear screen stopped functioning and went black. Later on the whole thing rebooted while driving down the freeway and everything went dark. A few days later things came back. When I got home after the road trip, I installed the latest update hoping that got rid of that problem.
