Have you tried to measure the wind resistance impact to efficiency? Also what about additional wind noise especially with bikes loaded up? Lastly, was curious about bugs splattering all over the bikes on the freeway given they are so high up and exposed. Am thinking about getting the 5 bike version. Any info appreciated!

So I have taken this now on 2 longer trips in Colorado. The rack sticks up quite a bit higher than I expected and does have an impact on range. I was getting ~1.8m/kwh over 500mile trip through the mountains with 5 bikes on it.
The wind noise was not bad from the front seat. Not sure from the rear but no complaints from my kids.
Didn't think about bugs but didn't notice any! Front of the car and windshield however...

Thanks for the feedback and pics - really helpful! My only hesitation right now is weight and putting it on solo as I like to keep my bike rack off the car unless needed. So deciding between this to fully fit our family of 5 the one or two times a year when we may need it, or the Rockymounts Guiderail (3 bike max) for most times when it's just me and my boys, or just me...

yeah I hear you on that. I have it setup in the garage as the standing rack for most of the time. If I only need to carry a few bikes I have an old 2 up hitch Yakima rack. Also have the roof rails and a few old roof trays if needed.
Configuration nightmare with all the possibilities of who is riding!
I would not suggest this as good rack for installing every weekend but it works for us for longer planned trips.

I just bought a Velocirax 6 bike with the lock. Easy install with 1 person. Getting the bikes on and off is pretty easy. The add-on locking cable feature is a quick install and seems to work well, and comes with its own combo lock. With 4 bikes on the rack its pretty hard for one adult male with a modicum of lifting each week to be able to get the rack back up. With two it was easy. Here are some pics showing the parts, partial install, and then how it looks with bikes hanging, with one bike at each end to show total width. And close ups of the straps, which are standard bike rack straps that they've been using for decades.
