This is how it was as an early Tesla adopter. Very friendly and lots of acknowledgment for a couple of years, then rarely. Still very few RIVs here in northern VA so the wave/blink gets responses. Also lots of folks who wave me down in a parking lot and say “who makes that car?” (as I stand next to the giant RIVIAN lettering…). Then, “is it from China?” :)
Really? Feels like they're everywhere here lately, but that's prolly just me.

I'm an introvert. So given a choice between death and waving at someone, I'd rather die. :p

I swear, if I get snubbed by one more CLEARLY new Rivian owner just cruising mindlessly down the road and ignoring my finger point/turn signal wink... I'm going to revolt!

I don't wave back. That is a jeep wrangler thing. We are not jeep wrangler
The Vette crowd waves too.

Here in RI, now that the weather is warm again, I am seeing more Rivians on the road. I went all winter without one sighting! I guess most folks keep them in storage for the winter or something? RARELY does anyone in another Rivian acknowledge when I [wave, flash the lights, etc.]. Kinda giving up on it.
I've been in RI a bunch this year. NEIT area, East Greenwich and Warwick. Mostly Warwick. But I think you're right, the further east I go, the fewer Rivians I see.

It seems to me, that it lies in the non-standardization of the "wave". I am also a Corvette owner and we always hold up the two (index and middle) fingers to make a "V" for vette. Everyone does it from the Original C1 owners to the new C8 owners.

From what it sounds like here, everyone has their own "wave" and some might just be thinking..."I have no clue who that person is! Maybe they think I am someone else."
In my opinion, a Full hand wave is not a "club" wave, it is a greeting of someone you know. Pointing a finger at someone is not acceptable! Giving the traditional greeting of a certain population is confusing, I'm not Polynesian. How about a two finger salute like the Cub Scout used to do, but just from the hand...kind-of like underlining the R in Rivian!

Funny, I had the exact same reaction! Was standing there talking with some folks at the back of my truck. It auto locked and made the Owl Hoot. One of the folks kid of freaked. I said that was my truck. She looked it over and said "what kid is it?" as we were standing at the back tailgate and she looked right at the lettering!

There are 8 r1s and 1 other r1t besides me in my neighborhood. This is within 1/2 a mile radius. None of them wave. Ones even a neighbor few house down. I thought he was a big off-roader guy having a bronco, jeep, and 4Runner with their r1s. Realized that he just tricks out the cars for off-road and doesn’t do anything with it. He didn’t care to talk much about the Rivian since it was his wife’s car.

Did a flash and a Forest Gump wave at another R1 in Costco's parking lot... Crickets... Maybe even a little "Look Away! Quick!"

Whatever... 😑

Took the wife to Shake Shack on Saturday. I spied a spot next to a silver R1S and was making a beeline toward it when my wife objected. She has seen too many of my “parked next to a Rivian” pics.

On the way home, ANOTHER Rivian pulls up besides us and motions to roll down the window. Of course the wife is trying to find the window switch to stop me but I was too fast. 🤣 We chatted for a moment and complimented each other on our choice of vehicles.

Afterwards, the rest of the ride home was full of variations on “”I’m so embarrassed,” “you are all members of a cult”, and “it’s not right to stop in traffic to converse with other drivers”.

So to all in the Northern Virginia area, if you see a Gen 1 silver R1S and just happen to drive up and notice me driving with my wife in the front passenger seat, just pull up and say “Hi Chris.” It will make her day.
