Meet ya at the end of plan 2. My wife and I quickly realized that place is better go to to with at least two other people due to the requirement to hike in groups during certain times of the year.
Bears?

Yeah. They have enough density of Grizzly up there that it's *strongly* recommended to walk in groups of 4 or more that are close together during certain times of year.

Oh man I guess that makes sense, we did a decent amount of hiking last year on your trip but limited it to no longer than 4/5 hours which is basically nothing since the dog was in the RV as she couldnt come on trails (rightfully so). Might be the case this time as well.

What time did you go? I found the hike in groups in the fall requirement/suggestion really interesting, haven't seen that in the U.S. before. Makes sense if you have the population they seem to up there, and with low visibility on a lot of trails it would really suck to blindly walk into a bear or vice versa.

We went late Sept to Early November going up North First to avoid any snow/cold and then down south later to avoid heat. The best timing really but when we were in the Grand Tetons which was probably one of the longest Hikes we did we carried bear spray with us the whole time and it was just my wife and I but so many other people were on the same trail we always felt safe.

Make sense. Yeah, I have never had issue hiking alone or with my wife in the lower 48. Banff definitely caught us off guard with that.

Hey, hey! Don't leave me out! After our conversations last night, we already know Banff will be a popular meetup site for Riviots. I'd love to be in that first wave. I want to see a Rivian Blue R1T with the blue of Lake Moraine in the background, along with a small crowd of Perma-Grins surrounding it.

"Perma-Grin" sounds like a super stealthy Human/Falcon hybrid, one capable of great heights, super speed, and outstanding Adventures, all while leaving little trace as to having been there.

Yep, on to my fourth cup of the morning.... ☕☕☕☕

Cannon Beach is Amazing!!!

Cannon Beach and Haystack Rock are iconic, but the Southern Coast is a well-kept secret compared to its Northern cousins like Cannon Beach and Seaside. You can sit along US-101 along the Southern stretches and go five minutes without any vehicles coming by. Likewise, the farther South you get from the Portland end of the state, the more chance you have of being the only one on the beach for hours, if you time it right. Even in the Summer.

My mom graduated from highschool in Reedsport. Granddad ran the IP mill at that point. She had fond memories of that area of the coast, and my dad still has some of the old glass fishing balls that she collected -- and many others that she found in antique shops over the years.

I will make it out there someday, but the closest I've been was Vancouver (BC, not Washington).

The best safety measures around Grizzlies includes always bringing bear spray and at least two friends who quite literally can't run to save their lives. Always have the bear spray handy. Always hike with one friend in front of you on the trail, and one behind you.

Should either attempt to pass you when running from an attacking bear, well, that's when the bear spray comes in handy. Let me know when you guys are ready to go hiking. I've got the bear spray, and I'd recommend heavily wearing flip-flops to save weight.

Life is Good!

When hiking in the Tetons once, a Ranger recommended having at least 6 people in the group. Someone in the group asked "Why six?" He said, with a straight face, "No group of six has ever been attacked before."
We didn't know if he was kidding or not, but luckily we had eight people. ?‍♀?

This is why I used driving on the beach in Oregon as my fun example about (hopefully) having some logic for range estimates with driving surface included in some way. Driving along the Oregon coast is tradition.
