Windshield Crack

I had safelite come and fix it and he was looking at the windshield manufacturer and he said they are a big glass company from China that manufacturers in the US.

He was right, Fuyao is a a Chinese glass company owned by a Chinese Billionaire who bought an old GM assembly plant in Ohio and now makes the automotive glass there, including the windshield Rivian uses.

There is a Netflix documentary named "American Factory" (2019) documenting the struggles the plant went through early on trying to instill the Chinese work ethic on "lazy American workers".. it's a very compelling watch if you are a Netflix subscriber.

I just noticed a crack on mine in the top right corner. I think I got it last night.

Already called my insurance company and made a claim. They want to repair it due to the size of the crack / repair area. They’ve authorized me to take it to the local Rivian service center for replacement.

I have 2,656 miles and drove a ton since June 17 shake it down before my service appointments.

I knew the windshields had a higher chance of damage due to windshield profile / angle and for that reason I had set my deductible to $100.

I already had a service appointment setup for August 10th and will have them add it to that ticket. I might have to pay for it out of pocket and get reimbursed.

I’m glad it’s outside my field of view. I was kinda wishing we could fix it instead of replacing it.

I took a rock chip low on my windshield a month ago, and within four hours it cracked enough that Safelite wouldn’t touch it. I’m far from a Rivian service center so I’m having a certified collision shop repair it but waiting on the windshield to come in. The crack is low enough it doesn’t really bother me, and after the first two days, it hasn’t gotten any worse.

All car manufacturers' window SUCK. We have a 2021 RAV4 Prime and we were driving to Vegas and a pebble.....P E B B L E (not a stone) hit the window and chipped it. We had it fixed immediately when we got to Vegas. Then 2 weeks later, another chip was on my way to work. It was a little bigger and the guy said "This will prevent it from getting bigger but you will still see it". We still haven't replaced the windshield.....when it starts spidering and becoming a distraction we will have it replaced.

I had a 2004 Dodge Magnum and a ROCK (about 1") hit the window, bounced off and NOTHING cracked or broke.

I think windshields these days are made different because of regulations.

Maybe car, but also I think it really depends on where you live.
I have yet to have a cracked windshield in the last 10-15 years while driving Teslas, BMW, Mercedes, Lexus, and Toyota in California.

2 of my chips came from driving the 80 and the 680 through Walnut Creek and Sacramento. We have a 2018 RAV4 and a pebble hit the bottom by the windshield wiper and a week later.....6" crack shows up. When I see semi trucks driving I either slow down or switch lanes.
