I'm sure there's more confirmation of this out there other than what I'm about to write:

I visited a local Rivian shop and the sales guy tells me he suspects it will not be as easy as a traditional ICE vehicle but should be somewhat accessible by owner... I'm not too excited about that response.

I believe I read It should be located under rear seat somewhere. Sales guy agreed.

I'd bet it's like Gen 2 R1 -- under the passenger seat.

As what traditional ICE vehicle? There are scores of cars with awful battery placement including the front wheel well, under fixed carpeting in the trunk, that you couldn't open when the battery was dead, The Q7 and Cayenne which required partially removing the front seat. My Fiat 500 was under the (cramped) back seat that you had to fold and lift with nothing to hold it up while you tried to lift the carpet and then the cover... with nothing to ground to nearby.

Sheesh ok I stand corrected. I should have said traditional in my family's experience!

It is fair to say the vast majority of ICE vehicles on the road (like Civics, Camrys etc not exotics) is under the hood and easily accessible as it is for some EVs like the Subaru/Toyota twins.

Expected lifetime on our Ioniq5 12v is not much more than 2 years. Just changed it for the second time (admittedly a pre-emptive move as the clock on the first replacement had almost run out and I was itching to do an AGM upgrade), and certainly glad I didn't have to rip out the back seat to do it!

Of course, Ioniq5 does have only a fanny-pack-sized frunk vs. R2's giant troll coffin, so there was plenty of room for the 12v under the hood. Hopefully someone posts some simple instructions for R2 seat removal that a half-ham-fisted DIYer can follow.

Does current (i.e., R1) software allow for the logging and display of 12v recharging data, i.e., a time-series voltage plot? If not, can a BM2 be attached to the R1 (and thus hopefully R2) 12v terminal posts? These have become virtual de riguere add-ons for careful Ioniq5 maintenance. Or maybe Rivians just never have 12v issues? 😉

Honestly shocked Rivian didn’t redesign for a lithium 12v battery like Tesla did. Tesla had numerous 12v issues and failures with the “normal” lead acid golf cart type batteries. Zero issues since they went to the lithium 12v.

How do you know they didn’t?

Sodium ion is now the best EV option anyways.

The influencers told us AGM still lol. Also that Ohmu thread on here is full of people with 12v issues still. Same as everyone who bought one from them for their Tesla when they were having 12v issues too. Hard pass
