Actually, things put in the receiver are the worst thing for safety. That transfers ALL of the energy of the impact directly to the structure of the vehicle. So your body feels the entire impact as well as the rest of the vehicle. Can result in personal injury very quickly or structure damage that goes un-noticed. Just a word of caution.

Great idea, I'm missing the rear step up my Sportrac had.

This time. Just saying, it's not a safe way to go.

Considering you are leasing and it would be no cost to you (execpt some time), you should have someone (bodyshop) inspect the frame and take a look around underneath. If the other guy's vehicle was "pretty messed up" as you say there could be concealed damage to your frame as suggested above. I would take the time to have it checked so you don't have a nasty surprise when you go to return the vehicle at end of lease. It will really suck if you don't file a claim and you find damage later! Also save the video if Gary caught the impact so you have proof of fault.

Heh... Look closer. If no frame damage, go buy a lottery ticket. Because you got very lucky.

Our 2007 Honda Pilot totaled a sedan and a Honda CRV when they hit the tow hitch on our Pilot in separate events. The Pilot “laughed” at the sedan which lost the radiator and more. The CRV hit our hitch so hard it tweaked the entire hitch unit and the rear part of the frame. It’s still on the road with a new OEM hitch, but I had to drill out the bolt holes a little to make it fit. My R1T replaced the Pilot that I used to drive all the time.

Doesn’t mean a hitch or hitch mounted device should be used for such reasons. It only demonstrates the cars that hit it was softer and sustained more damage as result. Crash a heavier or more rigid car into it, at same exact speed, the result would be reversed. Energy transfers through path of least resistance. Physics.

Cars are made to crumple in the front not rear. There are pictures around this forum where a car or truck rear-ended a standard Rivian and the Rivian looks almost untouched while the other car is smashed in.

Heck, 25 years ago I had "the cheapest new car on the market" - a Hyundai Accent. I got rear-ended on the freeway in stop-and-go traffic at moderate speed by a Chevy S-10 pickup.

The Chevy's front end was messed up. I had a minor dent and some paint transfer on my rear bumper.

Hrm, did OP delete things? Original post is empty other than the title, and I see no replies from OP, while others seem to be responding to now-gone replies.

Some people, well most, can't handle constructive criticism. I'm glad if the OP came out on top, I just don't want others thinking it's a great thing to do. Heck, some jurisdictions it's actually illegal to leave your tow receiver in.

Light trucks didn’t have to meet same standards as passenger cars. And back then manufacturers didn’t think as much about keeping customers alive longer to buy more cars.
