If anyone in one of these states who already has charging gear is looking to make some money, I'd buy at least the mobile charger and J1772 adapter from you. I'm in Texas, so no freebies for me :(

I'm planning to charge at work (free) initially, but will need a travel charger and adapter sooner or later. Maybe some Rivian ones will appear on ebay/marketplace once deliveries ramp up...

Only states that have adopted CARB rules requiring it to be provided for free.
The R1s don't come with chargers so it can't just be a CARB thing right?
The CARB rule only came into effect for 2026 model year.
Why wouldn't that apply to the new R1s?
Who said it didn’t?
I guess I'm not following. The question is, if it's a CARB thing, why don't the R1s come with chargers?

I think buying the adapters is just going to be a way of life for a bit. Unless you guarantee you never charge away from your house there is going to be a chance you need an adapter until the world 100% is NACS.

Especially with the level 2 chargers in the wild being almost 100% J1772, every new EV owner will need at least the one $50 adapter in their car for a long time.

Am I the only one who opened this thread because I was wondering how someone made a thread about chargers political?
Ya missed out, all the posts got deleted (including mine, which I thought was quite level-headed and not meant to incite anything).

The 'politics' involved was essentially making red state/blue state comparisons regarding what laws may or may not be involved in the free chargers and adapters that are becoming available for R2 in particular states. Some of the back and forth got heated. I actually don't think it was all that bad. Some discussion of these topics will have to involve politics - it touches on all aspects of our society.

I think the issue/breaking point is when discussions become about political mud-slinging and hyper-partisian fighting. Otherwise, any time I mention the law that will allow Rivian to be a dealership in Washington State should technically get deleted because it's "political". Passing any law involves politics, and not being 'allowed' to discuss it is a bit extreme to me.

Admin(s), please let me know if this post is "too much". I'd love to have a discussion about it and learn what criteria you have when removing a post.

FWIW - In all the time I've owned my 2018 Tesla Model 3 (with 139,000 miles on it), I've needed an adapter 3 times. Once with the mobile connector at an AirBnB so I could get a few miles on their outside 'household' plug. And twice in public places. The first was at a charger in the parking lot of a hospital while my wife was having a procedure, and the second was at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida which had some NACS and some J1772 ports. Many hotels have older J1772 cables because their chargers are intended for people doing overnight stays.

Our first Tesla came with the mobile charger and J1772 adapter in 2018 Nevada but we had to pick up the car in CA since there were no service/delivery centers in Reno yet. When our second one came along, we picked it up here in 2022 and it didn't include the mobile charger but I had already bought a spare since I thought the one we had for the first one was going out (it wasn't and still works fine). Our first EV was a 2012 Leaf so I had already installed a 1450 receptacle and bought a Juicebox 40 for that. When the first Tesla was added, I installed a second 1450 since our grandson started driving the Leaf and I wanted no conflict with charging times. When we got the second Tesla, he sold the Leaf and bought the Model 3 and is now living in Ohio so we're back to a one EV home until the R2 comes. I just ordered a CCS to NACS adapter for the first time since the R2 is NACS but only accepts V3/4 superchargers and some of the routes we drive don't have those. If we trade/sell our Model Y, I'll continue to use the Tesla Mobile charger on the R2.

I personally only have a mobile charger in the car bc of emergencies (never happened yet though thankfully) and I installed a NEMA 6-20 receptacle at my parents house for charging when I visit. Cheap 12-2 NM-B wire giving me 16a x 240v = 3.8kW. Cheap and easy install for L2 charging overnight. Probably cost $100 total, would've been less but I paid $40 for a high quality Hubbell receptacle vs cheapo from Lowes.

I've got free charging at work so I'm going to be using the J1772 adapter all the time. It also looks like, other than Superchargers, DCFC is dominated by CCS1 at the moment. We do a lot of road trips so I think both of my adapters will be getting a workout.
