There was a female executive that sued Rivian for discrimination last year. One of the things she claimed is that Rivian significantly underpriced their cars.
If they disingenuously sold customers on a configuration at a specific price and suddenly use the current economic climate to claim inflation is forcing them to increase prices by 20%, then this is a bait and switch that has left me questioning the integrity of the leadership of Rivian at the highest levels.

Calm yourself. I'm not any level of reservation holder, so this doesn't affect me one bit. That's not to say I don't sympathize with those that got affected by this.

But still, with all the impulsive cancellations going on, Rivian announces that LE and certain holders from a certain date will have their older prices honored and have CANCELLED their reservations with no way of getting their places back, would be a lesson in not being so hasty when news falls.

I still think to let the dust settle and see what Rivian's final decision is. If it winds up that your reservation does get affected, then do what you think is right for you. If that means cancel and get your deposit back, then go for it. But if you cancelled and then it's announced that your reservation position pricing isn't getting affect and no longer have it, you'll regret that more than the initial burst of how betrayed you felt and immediately cancelling.
Yeah, I don't think this was a Rivian marketing ploy. They are not testing the waters and then pulling back. Unless your into pain, nobody is saying thank you Rivian may I have another.

I quit following this thread 40-something pages ago so apologies if this has already come up, but...

For those keeping your reservation or who are still on the fence, be sure to get revised insurance quotes. I'll be surprised if this doesn't raise rates at least a little.

There was a better way to do a price increase, it could’ve been a graduated scale depending on when you ordered, whether you had a launch edition, or what your configuration was. They could’ve announced price increases throughout the year to soften the blow, any number of ways they could’ve done this than what they did yesterday.

The way they did this was just a giant middle finger to all of their customers at once even some who’ve been waiting over four years. I suspect they knew the entire time they wouldn’t be able to produce these at this cost, and thought when they first announced it that there’s no way in hell this will sell for under $90,000, turns out I was right.

The only reason I got in was because when they came out with under $75,000, I felt like I could afford it and it was a great value. Now not so much.

And the simple fact that someone here are finalizing orders while getting the before price, and some of us are just days or weeks behind them getting hit with a 20% price hike, is simply fair. Those people are lucky and I don’t want to dampen their excitement, it’s just an unfair situation all around.

For now. Should they come back to the BBB bill and pass it before the 2023 tax year it will almost certainly apply retroactively to the 2022 tax year, as far as EV credits are concerned.

There was a long, long discussion about this on other forums and that was the consensus take.

Meaning there is a chance that people buying Rivians at the new price will miss out on the tax rebate. It's probably unlikely but it is a possibility. But you certainly shouldn't be buying a Rivian if you need the tax rebate to hit your budget.
Oh, I totally get it. Sadly, I am a tax attorney by trade (ha!), and follow these things closely. I just frequently see people talking about the MSRP and income limits like they are currently in place, which they are not. They certainly could get passed, but as of today, we are still just under the old system.

I agree with the general sentiment that if that is going to make or break your decision, you should really think hard before moving forward.

If it's not going to influence peoples' decisions, then let's remove the tax break and save some taxpayer money.

That is certainly an argument a lot of people make. However, I was just referring to the fact there is uncertainty about what will happen with the credit going forward. Right now we are under one set of rules ($7,500 credit, with no MSRP or income limitations), but that set of rules could change retroactively to the beginning of the year. So if you are basing your decision on the current rules, you may be stuck holding the bag.

I for one hope they don't change it for this year at least. Assuming I do go forward with my purchase, it would be nice to get that little extra savings come tax time.

The more I sit with this price increase the more I realize I'll be canceling.
  1. RJ wants to upsell me on recurring services. Will my Driver+ be turned off 2 years into ownership if I don't sign up?
  2. Unproven service record, nonexistent charging network (at the moment).
  3. Insurance cost will go up.
  4. In-house designed motor for dual-motor version which is still just CAD files I'm sure.

Yes, Laura Schwab did warn Rivian execs about R1 being underpriced. She was subsequently blown off by her bro-culture boss and advised not to mention this to RJ. Well now those of us waiting 3+ years with $17k price hike and further pain of stock investments now have ample evidence this company is not loyalty based. I’m understanding of a price adjustment, however 20% increase and how Rivian choose to dump this information on their loyal, early backers is how you commit brand suicide. You have taken 10+ years of crafting an image to blow it up in a day. Congratulations… Ford and GM owe you a debt of gratitude.

That someone probably shorted the stock the day before and has left already. The more I learn about the company the fishier it looks.

EV9 is looking better and better ... Just make it an electric Telluride and they will have another winner on their hands!
I also have my eyes on the EV9. Any clue as to when it’ll be released? I’m also hoping that Ford releases the EV Explorer next year.
