R2 Software Update 2026.24.41 - Details

I've had my R2 in service twice now trying to figure out the SSD issue. They can reproduce but haven't been able figure it out, and due to the inconsistency, they tend to mark it as fixed the moment it randomly works again after a sleep cycle. Guess it's comforting to see I'm not the only one.

Yeah glad its not just me having this issue. Seems like this is on Rivians end to patch up. I will say though the samsung flash drive has not given me any problems now. Both SSD kept dropping connection and going unavailable, and would not format. If flash drive stops working just giving up for now until they fix and putting dash cam back in.

As an update to my version discrepancy issue, I stopped by the SC today and they forced an update to .41. That fixed my issue in the app showing as .0. All is now well.

Also picked up two new keycards and a compact spare. Just waiting on my crossbars and cargo cover and this delivery will be complete!

Really loving this car though. It just clicked on the ride to and from the SC. Just a fantastic all around vehicle.

So I was one of the people that had my car in for service due to faulty blind spot cameras and a faulty microphone. This update fixed both of them. Only the microphone bug was in the release notes.

Yea, seems like a Rivian software mounting issue. My drive works till sleep then it shows as missing drive. I have had another related issue that when in the formatting loop the car will soft reset.

I think you're right. I've also had that sudden reset twice, where mid-format the OS seems to crash and stick on the logo screens. Never came back on its own so I did a soft reset to get out of it. This was with a 1TB T7 Shield I used for years in my R1S with no issues.

In the meantime, I (painfully) ordered a new 2TB T7 Shield and plugged it in straight from the box last night. Formatting was successful for the first time and so far it has stayed connected over the last 24 hours with only one brief moment across 7 trips showing the "plug in" overlay which quickly dismissed. Will keep checking it.

I received a courtesy check-in call about this from the SC this afternoon and they confirmed that they've forwarded as much info as they've been able to gather to the appropriate supervisors and engineering, so hopefully something comes of this in the next patch.

I bought this one bc R1 users had success with it and it’s cheap compared to an SSD. It has much better build and internals than any random USB drive. I believe someone above said they had success with it with R2 also.

Yeah, my 1TB T7 was in my R1T prior. Just changed it over to a lexar flash drive. Lets see if it stays.

My thought on the people having issues with the portable SSDs is the USB C port goes to sleep, it takes the portable SSD longer to power up than the jump drives and the system is failing if it does not get a response in an expected time.

They could probably fix the problem adding routine to verify the SSD is awake before initializing Gear Guard.

That is what I have been using for years in my R1T and now in the R2. Other than a second format required in my R2, it has worked without any issues.

I've never trusted thumb drives after I nuked 5 of them on a Tesla. I use SSDs now. It's one of those things where $100 now can save you thousands later.

I've been using thumb drives on Tesla's for over 8 years with no issues. The only issue\s I recall having were early on in a 2018 Model 3 where there was an odd issue corrupting some stored footage. I believe it was resolved in a software update.

SSD's are using higher grade NAND for sure and better memory controllers, but I think its unnecessary unless you have one laying around. Given the recent price spike on drives, sticking with USB is much cheaper and is proven to work fine.

The 2TB I just bought is now practically double the price of the 4GB version I bought in 2023. But for longevity/heat/reliability/etc., if I can get the SSD to actually work, that's what I'll stick with.

The samsung flash drive linked above is what is working for me currently. Tried T7 and SanDisk Extreme Pro and both had issues.

I'll end up with an SSD again if they can figure this out.
