R1T Gen2 Charging issue

Not PURELY R1T specific, but...

Took delivery of my new R1T, Gen2. They didn't have the CCS-NACS adapter on hand (why? mystery), but said they would send it, and it showed up within a few days. I immediately popped out to try it - used it to connect my Emporia charger to the NACS port on my truck... but no love. The truck didn't recognize that a charger was connected, and the charger didn't recognize that a vehicle was connected. Went through the various steps to check it all out, including a truck reboot, still no luck. Since the charger had been working fine with my Gen 1 R1T, I drove off to a new local Tesla supercharger, and plugged in. Worked fine there.

So I suspect it is the adapter. Anyone else have issues with the adapter? I have an appointment with the service center early next week, so hopefully this gets ironed out.

That adapter only works for level 3 charging. You have to buy a level 2 adapter.

NACS confusion claims another victim. There are two different adapters. One has CCS pins and is for fast DC charging, the other is only a J1772 inlet and is for AC L2 charging.

It’s elementary. And you can pretty much ignore/dismiss CHAdeMo.

Your NACS charging port can handle both AC (aka level 2) and DC (level 3) with the same shape plug/receptacle and pin out.

The CCS1 combo port, MY24 and prior, has two parts. The circular part is J1772 (AC, level 2). This combined with the two pinned oblong is for DC fast charging (level 3).

To adapt a J1772 home/hotel charger, you need a J1772 (female) to NACS AC (male) adapter.

To adapt a CCS1 fast charger, you need a CCS1 (female) to NACS DC (male) adapter.

AC = alternating current
DC = direct current

Charger plug (male) --> Female end of adapter - Male end of adapter --> Your car's charge port (female)

What other posters here intoned - when we set up the NACS home charger for my husbands Tesla, I tired using it (with the adapter) for the R1T; no work. The Rivian NACS adapter only works with the DCFC.

Might also be Tesla specific, too, but we don't have any non-Tesla NACS DCFC charging centers around here to try out.

Strange that was the adapter you received. I recently took delivery of my R1T and it came with a J1772-NACS adapter. I was able to use that adapter on my Emporia LVL 2 charger at home and haven't had any issues.

THat's what I was thinking/hoping/assuming. Entirely possible I got a bum adapter.

I have the one that Rivian send me in hand. It looks identical to the "J1772 AC Adapter" for sale in the Gear Shop.

As far as I can tell from the photos, anyway. My best guess is that it's a bum adapter, or I need one that is subtly different from this. I guess I'll find out next tuesday. Luckily there is a new Tesla Supercharger in town so I can top off for my weekend's travels.

If those things are true, then you CAN NOT use this adapter for L2, home, AC charging. It is for DCFC only. That's it, period, there is no universal adapter. It works with one, or the other.

I have one adapter, the one that Rivian included in my purchase. I have a Gen2 R1T, with the NACS charging port. I have an Emporia charger at home that I was using with my previous R1T, that didn't have the NACS port.

1: when I tried using my Emporia charger via the adapter, neither the charger nor the vehicle recognized that I was plugged in.
2: When I went to a local supercharger, I was able to plug in and charge there.

This is what leads me to suspect the adapter - my charger was working with my old truck three weeks ago, and my truck charges at a supercharger. This is the booklet that came with the adapter. As far as I can tell, it's the correct adapter - the "J1772 AC Adapter"

You showed a picture of an AC adapter. This cannot work on a DCFC charger. It CAN work on Tesla destination chargers and other Tesla specialty AC chargers, some may look slightly Supercharger-like. That will never work on a DC supercharger.

You should post a photo here of what you have, and also post the location of the charger you used. That would give a full answer to what is going on.

He said he charged his NACS Rivian at a supercharger - he did not say he used the adapter at a supercharger.

The original post is confusing because he uses the wrong terms and calls the adapter a CCS->NACS adapter, which it is not. That's why all the posts are giving correct but irrelevant advice.

Bottom line, it now appears he has a J1772->NACS adapter, which is exactly what he needs to use to charge at a J1772 Level 2 charger. If it doesn't work, then either it isn't pushed in/latched all the way or the adapter is faulty.

OP, you're going to face this same confusion if you call Rivian and mention CCS and superchargers and Emporia etc. Don't do that. In fact, if it were me I would just stop by the service center and hand them the adapter and tell them it doesn't work. They have Level 2 chargers there and can verify that, then they will give you a replacement if they have one on hand or order you a new one if they don't have a replacement.
