Rivian Tells Some R2 Owners To Pause DC Fast Charging

Rivian service has been contacting select R2 owners about the high-voltage distribution system, and one owner has now posted the scope of the work. A technician inspects the DC fast charging connector-to-header joint for gap and thermal abnormalities, and if that joint comes back NOK, which is Rivian’s shorthand for not OK, the DCFC Header Assembly and the DCFC Connector Assembly are both removed and replaced.

That description came from a Rivian in-app service conversation dated August 19, where Rivian referred to it as an engineering investigation recall on the owner’s R2. The owner asked whether Engineering considers the vehicle safe to drive and DC fast charge normally until his appointment on the 27th, or whether he should avoid fast charging until it has been inspected. Rivian responded that as a precaution, it recommends holding off on DC fast charging until then.

Car started charging but then was shut off after a few minutes followed by a sulphur smell in the cabin. Diagnosis was bad DCFC Connector and bus bar.

I feel better every day about waiting for forest green and coastal cloud so some of these early gremlins were resolved on the manufacturing line before coming to me...

I think the whole 1st year allocation will have issues. I'm not expecting much given Rivian is dead last in reliability.

I hope the community can figure out the range of affected VINs. It will help some of us with assigned VINs but still waiting for delivery. I would surely prefer to be assigned a new unaffected VIN rather than deal with a potential issue like this. Based on that specific Reddit post, so far it looks like the ones they have called for this potential issue are in the 1000-3000+ VIN range.

Rivian owners LOVE their cars. Even after many many service visits that addressed a million problems.

It's bc there is nothing like Rivian on the market. Maybe by 2030 Scout will get it together and we will have something close lol.

Now that they have identified a potential issue they will not deliver a vehicle before it clears that evaluation.

I have VIN 1619 and have not been contacted. I have yet to DC fast charge my R2. It would be nice to know if I’m going to have any issues as I have a road trip planned for next month.

Seriously, I guess I need to try fast charging just to test it out.

Considering the possible danger, might be worth having the SC check it out as a test, rather than throwing high voltage current through something that may be compromised.

I'm VIN 2130 and haven't been contacted. I've only done 1 DCFC and all was well, I did get a warning the adapter, CCS to NACS was getting hot so it throttled back the speed. I stopped the charge at that point since I was only doing it to confirm DCFC would work. I'll try another one tomorrow at Tesla charger.
