For those that have done PPF on an R2 or similar size, what has been your cost and type of PPF if you mind sharing. Looking to see if there is significant variation and whether to actually entertain this or not. Im still debating purchasing vs leasing, and of course would only do PPF if I purchase.

I have a quote for $5995 for full PPF using XPEL. I booked an appt in Sept to get it done. I'm also doing tint and ceramic at an additional cost.

I'm getting a "highway PPF package" (front-facing surfaces, not including front fenders) and rocker panels for $2200 from an XPEL shop. Also adding ceramic on front side windows and windshield and full ceramic coating for additional cost.

I'm deciding between two options right now:

1. Full XPEL Stealth - $5700
2. XPEL full front, side mirrors, door edges, rocker panels, rear bumper, $2100

Ceramic Coating added for an additional $ 500.

XPEL Ultimate Plus, includes painted front surfaces, headlights, fog lights, full hood, full fenders, painted mirror caps and essential gloss-black or painted trim pieces (forward facing) - $1900

Added: A Pillars, door sills, luggage guard, Strip above windshield - $350

XPEL Prime XR PLUS front and rear for $800 (no windshield).

Hesitant on ceramic coating as I wasn't a fan of it previously. Plus the prices vary significantly ($1000-$1500). The over $1k ceramic jobs use a higher quality ceramic coating typically but still a bit much for the return you get.

This is an area where prices should be discussed and needs a price reset to drive prices down a bit. I get some things can be labor intensive but the prices (especially for tint) have gotten out of control post covid.

The ceramic coating for a black car is incredible. Way easier to clean, way easier to dry. The drying part is what takes me the longest, plus the headache of water spots. the ceramic coating makes it so much more hydrophobic so I can get the water off before it dries up.

I'm still debating. I definitely know all the benefits, but had it previously years ago and it just didn't last and for the cost, I felt the occasional wax and detail spray would suffice. Also, I want to minimize maintenance but I still have to be careful using deionized water, drying quickly, no wax based products, hand wash, etc. I don't want it to be more work to maintain it versus just doing normal detailing. I am on roadtrips often so I can't maintain strict maintenance all the time.

I am curious what pricing people are seeing for it. Obviously it has to be an apples to apples comparison as the type of coating used varies quite a bit. Those $500 quotes are likely not using the same products nor are they doing the same amount of prep work.

The $500 quotes are usually attached to the XPEL work, rather than by itself. At least that's what the shop that I'm talking to is doing. If I did it alone, it would be $1500, which I agree, isn't really worth it.

My ceramic coating lasted 5 years on my Model Y and is still looking pretty great. (2020 Model Y, ceramic coating in 2021). After washing it, no detailing no wax etc. it looks incredible. Pretty much worth it for me.

You could do it yourself too if you time it right after your PPF is installed so you don't need to claybar and all that.

I had it on a 2021 Model Y which I still have, and it just didn't last (Its been 5 years).

I just got the PPF and Tint done but my combined quote was still $1100 for the ceramic. At $500, I would have seriously considered it. I contacted another shop and its $1200 (8 year warranty) or $1400 which includes plastic trim and glass as well.

The $500 add-on I got an option for is a "5-year" ceramic coating. I think there's a $1000 for a 10-year version. On my Model Y I got a 3-year one... and it still looks great (maybe it could use a refresher, but I'm probably not going to at this point).

I've done ceramic on my own cars and several friends' with great results. We all use Avalon King Max. Pretty easy to DIY just takes half the day. It's pointless to put over most PPF however, still sold as snake oil since they can charge more.

I also thought it was pointless over PPF, since PPF is already hydrophobic and all that. But the last shop I got my car at convinced me it would be great. It does seem easier to clean and it's way shinier without any waxing etc... but that could be a placebo as well.

Exactly, and @twraps did a test of half the windshield. I have it on video, the ceramic side was dirtier than the plain WPF side. He also had a conversation with someone at the wrap vendor or a chemical engineer or something, who said what you said. It's already fully sealed.

I did have to get my ceramic removed from the paint, the PPF was not sticking.
