Just finished a chat with Rivian customer service. They confirmed there will be no removable roof option for the R1S. Super disappointing given that the Hummer does have it.l and the Rivian website continues to show the removable roof option.

Also, they have confirmed there will be no sunroof. Just a fixed glass roof.

With all due respect, I'm. glad they are not doing this.

Its just more distractions and they need to keep their head down and get the production ramped up.... Less variations = higher probability of success!

Rivian can crank out more trucks with a smaller battery pack due to battery constraints.

The 400 mile Max pack is going to increase the roughly 7150 pound curb weight by hundreds of pounds and probably affect performance. I am assuming Rivian is using the exact same Samsung SDI 2170 battery cells that are used in its super-sized 135 kWh battery packs that get 314 miles of range.

I understand that the removable roof feature may be appealing to some - but personally I think of it as an unnecessary complication and likely failure point that I would not want in any vehicle. Plus you have to figure out what to do with it when you take it off...

The fixed glass roof is better, but I'd go with a standard metal roof if I had the choice. My Subaru has a large sunroof - I rarely open it or even slide open the cover, and now it has a huge crack in it (unknown cause, I'm guessing either hail or a random rock thrown up on the highway) which will cost $1500-$2000 to fix.

I personally would not even want a glass roof if there’s no retractable shade. In my Teslas, the glass roof raise the cabin temperature significantly in the summer months, even the glass roof is tinted. I need to spend extra on a sunshade.

I care actually. A factory optioned ability to open the roof somehow is a big plus to me personally. I’ve had the sunroof in my audi leak before, the one in my 4Runner rust, and I’ve even had to close the sunshade once or twice. I still think they’re worth it. I miss driving my old TJ around with the top and doors off. I’m glad you guys don’t want/need/see the value in having one. But some of us do enjoy them and would like for it to at least be an option. I personally don’t see a point in having the camp kitchen. But I’m not going to jump into a camp kitchen thread and tell everyone who wants one that they’re just an overpriced waste of space. If they want it, more power to them and I hope they enjoy it.

Also, I don’t think making the sunroofs an option for later would affect someone getting an R1 without one. It would just delay some of us who want a sunroof/removable roof in getting our vehicles like those waiting for the Max Pack.

I was warming to the idea of a removable roof as the appeal of a rooftop popup tent has grown on me.

What I find most surprising about this change is that it is coming from CS. It’s odd that one of the few details they can share is the delay or cancellation of a feature, given the little amount of information they are able to release.

Bummed about this. Was planning to go for this option. Oh well.

I was, too. Very disappointed, but I understand. They need to simply manufacturing for now and produce in numbers.
