Even a year from now I would take the current R1T over the Silverado EV. And based on past experience with a Volt, not every Chevy dealer was capable of servicing or even doing basic recall work on their own EVs. I’m sure they have plans to change that given their stated goals for the future but it’s still an overall poor experience getting an EV serviced by Chevy. If the one Tech who was trained to work on the Volt was out sick or on vacation, we had to wait or go somewhere else.

Rivian has and will make mistakes. But the legacy manufacturers make plenty of mistakes too. Chevy botched the Bolt even though it came AFTER their advertised commitment to an EV future. Ford has a waiting list for the Mach E but that vehicle is having plenty of issues of it’s own. The only saving grace these large manufacturers have is the resources to outlast Those many mistakes.

With the 3/1 price increase the R1T is an even better deal than it was before. By the time you get your Max pack they will have worked out most of the rollout kinks and you should receive a well sorted out truck. A unique truck that will always be interesting to someone else if you decide you want to try something else in a few years. But comparing it to the Ioniq 5 or the EQS isn’t fair. Different purposes, different vehicles.

Does a Porsche allow the wallflower treatment?

The guy who wants to tow his 997.2 to the race track?

I guess you could just race the R1S instead, but that would kinda piss off the Pcar crowd.
No, but if you love the car you live with it.

Yes, this is true, I am that guy. I would love to race an R1S to piss of the Pcar crowd. Despite an obsession with all things old and new german races car relate...they ain't my peeps.

I wasn't comparing it. I was using it as an example of how misplaced the R1S is in the market place. Doesn't fit in the middle (too expensive) doesn't fit at the top (too nichy and outclassed in luxury).

So why would a new manufacturer try to fit into segments others are already filling?

I literally included your quote where you said you wanted an occasional tow vehicle (3rd paragraph, 4th sentence).

And yes, a niche few choose the R1S/R1T. It isn't a mainstream product. Can you name a vehicle that costs $80k and is mainstream? No, because $80k vehicles aren't mainstream products.
Ok whatever. If you want to be snarky about it...you win.

I guess the problem is you do not see market, not that it is not there.

Jeep has sold over 200k Grand Cherokees annually in the US and Canada since 2014. This is closer to the market that Rivian would be tapping as well as the Range Rover markets.

They want to sell cars maybe?
They have a waitlist 80k large, I think they have an idea what they want to do. If it isn't for you, it doesn't need to be. Not every vehicle needs to be for everyone. Most vehicles aren't for everyone. It's incredibly naive to think that every vehicle should be for everyone. If it isn't for you, go drive something that is, your money your choice.

This could be true actually.

R1S delivered 2/2023
Completely disagree….that’s why I’ve been sitting here as a former Land Rover/Range Rover owner biding my time for 3 years….the R1S has hit a HUGE home run taking Land Rover customers…and you’ll see a few $250,000 G -Wagon converts to the R1S after getting smoked on the line.

Look, calling me incredibly naive is hardly the worst thing I've been called even today..but chill out man. This is just a discussion on a thought I had today about Rivian products.....

Go fight with someone on FB. That's what it's for. If you want to discuss and not try to "win" arguments, I'm here.

‘22 Ioniq 5, ‘78 Jeep Wagoneer
High-end to performance SUV market is pretty damn large. Both we and a large bulk of Colorado folks have had one or more of them. Totally guessing, but it must be up there in US volume compared to 1/2 ton trucks.

Call it Jeep Grand Cherokee + JGC SRT, Volvo XC 90, Cadillac Escalade, Tesla X, Chevy Tahoe+, Porsche Cayenne, Lincoln Aviator+Navigator, Jag FPace, Acura MDX, Land Rovers, Audi Q7 + Q8 and RS versions. I'm probably missing another handful or more.

If you're suggesting the R1S doesn't compare favorably to the above, then this is likely the wrong place to find agreement. I'm looking forward to opening a can of whoop ass on my neighbor with a Lamborghini Urus at 40% of his cost.

I'm kinda hurt I've got only 1 "No" vote. Most valid points I think so far are not considering the Cherokee / Wagonner / Rover market. Heck, a Grand Wagoneer is $88k these days! I'd rather have an R1S for sure.
