Apparently Chevy just announced that they are going to announce a fully electric corvette. Me not really seeing how they will be able to stuff enough batteries into a corvette to make it work out well, expects that it might be the Corvette SUV that the rumourmill keeps crunching, so thusly, would be potential competition to the R1S.

I really have to expect that the performance is going to be better than the R1S, otherwise, what's the point?

I hope they don't "Mach E" this thing. While I can appreciate the Mach E I'd think GM is going for a true sports car to show off. Things like the Taycan exist, a fairly large battery but good performance without the need to go the cross over route. I guess it depends on how much money in engineering GM wants to throw at this.

I don't know about an SUV/crossover. I mean, look at the Roadster. Isn't the whole point of a Corvette to keep the weight low and efficient packaging? Seems to me like if you could do that, and get a good Whr/mi, they wouldn't necessarily need to pack it to the brim with batteries. That said, the Ultium is a good platform to start with, the packaging of a battery platform bodes well for a Corvette weight distribution, and the torque/power in an electric motor on a volume basis would be a big plus. I could see this being a monster of a Corvette.

Although, I could also see all the Corvette snobs moaning and complaining about lack of a V8.

Agreed. I personally love the Mach E with the exception of it's name. Other than it being called a "Mustang" I think it's a great vehicle. I hope GM doesn't do similar and call an SUV a Corvette.

GM is way behind in EV development despite having an early lead, and blowing it. This is an announcement of despertation to try to stay relevant in the press. Mary Barra is saying anything and everything that might stick to the wall.

We all know this is almost certainly not going to happen:

"GM sold fewer than 25,000 EVs last year but plans to launch several electric models in the next two years.
....
Nonetheless, General Motors CEO Mary Barra announced Tuesday that GM aims to deliver 400,000 EVs in North America by the end of 2023, as reported by Automotive News"

That does make me wonder if the ultium modules are usable without having to completely encase them in another tray like they are doing with the Hummer. Seems to add a lot of weight.

Porsche already has 718 EV in works, which is much smaller than current Corvette.

So if Porsche can, I think GM should be able to stuff enough batteries in Corvette, which is bigger.
Those vehicles are probably not doing many long trips, so range targets might also be lower than for an SUV.

I'm getting ahead of myself and will accept the negative effects of passion this may stir in others...but it's my opinion that while I'd think a Corvette should be 2D I'd be ok with them making it 4D (or even 2 smaller suicide doors) if they aren't able to cut down the Ultium platform enough to fit the a Corvette footprint but also give it decent range (around 220 miles).

The Taycan is around $80-110k depending on if you want the base or Cross Turismo, if the Corvette could hit even the $110k figure but get closer to Taycan GTS levels of performance (which is a $130k MSRP) it would be positioned well. And they can pump out special versions every couple years and raise the price to keep it profitable.

Oh, yeah, for sure. The Hummer is their "special child", and they had to make an entirely different housing for the Ultium packs, due to it requiring a stacked bank. I mean, the minimal wiring harness alone will help keep the weight down.

They also noted some improvements in the Ultium platform during the same announcement.

Solid State Batteries coming to a Corvette s00n, real s00n. Just two years away, lol.
There are rumours that GM is already testing the gen2 ultium batteries, combined with the report for them trying to get the EPA to approve the use of carbon nanotubes in the batteries, it makes sense. I've heard that Gen2 is Li-SeS2, and that tech will require them. Supposedly that chemistry is capable of more than twice the energy density of currently in-use tech. If GM actually is that close to getting them out the door, it would definitely enable low-volume use of them in expensive top-of-the-line vehicles.
