<R1S manual drops with HVAC diagram>

Forum: “OMFG THIS IS THE WORST THING EVER AND A HUGE DEAL!” #SHORTSBABY

<Consults R1T Manual>

Me: So, exactly the same as it’s been for months and nobody cared or noticed. Roger that.
I noticed and cared: https://www.rivianforums.com/forum/threads/ask-us-rivian-r1t-owners-anything-ama.3979/post-114086

I still care because this is a downgrade from our 2006 LR3 which allows for 3 zones of temperature control: driver, front passenger, and 2nd+3rd rows

There are effectively 2 zones for air distribution and fan speed though. The driver and front passenger share the direction of air distribution (e.g. face or feet) and the rear rows share too. Likewise the fan speed is shared by driver and front passenger then the rear rows use a fan speed of their choice.

It all works pretty well and I’m not looking forward to having only 2 zones of temperature control and, presumably 1 zone for air distribution and fan speed.

I know: life is pretty good if this constitutes a major concern.

Agreed ... a complete miss for an $80000 vehicle! Even my $40000 Telluride has at least tri-zone HVAC control. Not a real big issue for me as I rarely have rear passengers, but understandably a feature that should be in this class of vehicle.
It’s kind of silly to think you can have 3 temp zones actually work in the cabin of a car. The reality is the whole car evens out to one temperature.

Just some thoughts on things people have brought up....

- I think the middle row will work a lot like a Ford explorer. You pull a lever on the side of the seat to recline it slightly up to 10° back for comfort. You pull the same lever to fold the back down forward for flat operation. Based on the video we saw it looks like the seat will also slide forward while upright so you can get into the third row. This is similar to some minivans I have seen that do that where the Ford explorer will make you tumble the seat forward by folding it down. The only other possible type of slide would be for you to slide it Forward permanently so somebody could reach it from the front seat the expeditions used to have this for the middle of the second row.
- I'll add that I know everyone is crazy for Captain's chairs but in my family we like having all three kids in the middle row so that we still have the cargo room with the third row folded- the tail gate reminds me of the 2003 generation explorers. They had a split tailgate where the entire rear gate opened like a minivan but then you could open just the rear window. I prefer this with the gate opening down and the window opening up. I'm really looking forward to being able to open the top window as it was always very handy to put stuff in the car without opening the entire gate especially if you had it packed with stuff.
- I've owned a lot of SUVs for a long time and agree All the lumber can go on the roof racks with ratcheting straps.
- our current explorer and many of the ones before it all had just a front zone in rear zone for climate control and we have never had any issue. I think having vents in the ceiling are critical but don't see the need for a third zone. Maybe I don't know what I'm missing. Even a lot of the larger SUVs like expeditions and suburbans only have two zones.
- sometimes the buttons on the rear lift gates are not on the gate themselves but are on the sidewall inside. Do I remember seeing a button next to the compressor outlet in a video? If the top part of the lift gate is just glass there may not be a place for the button and it has to be on the inside panel.

I'm not seeing anything about using the crossbars in the trunk. Also not seeing anything about limiting the lift gate. I'm real worried it'll hit my garage door when I open the trunk.

I'm hoping these first world climate control and liftgate "failures" cause many people to cancel their R1S order so I get mine sooner!

It’s less about temperature and more about being a family vehicle with kids in the back. Many times we will have a car full of people (mostly kids) and those in the back want more fan speed than those in the front. To me fan speed is more of a concern than actual temperature. (Setting the scene: picking the boys up from a hot sweaty baseball practice, they pile in the back and want the fan on full blast, but I’ve been in the car and am fine with the fan on low. In this situation being able to blast the air in the back is helpful.)

3 zones has been common for well over a decade on people movers. Our 2004 Toyota Sienna had 3 zone climate. Most if not all current minivans, 3 row crossovers and SUVs have 3 zone climate.

Lol seriously. My mind is blown at the guy who needs 68 degrees and his wife 78. Like, what do they do in their house?

The complaints about split tailgate functionality when it's literally the same as every other split tailgate on the market.

The concern over "only" having 4 cupholders and 6 bottle holders.

The frustration about having to downgrade to dual zone HVAC, like it's a significant affront to the comfort of their backseat passengers.

The need to have a rear zone for pets, like you can't just set the whole vehicle to whatever temperature is appropriate.

Just...chill everyone. If these issues are really deal breakers for you, that sucks, but are they really???

Here's a peak into the back of a production R1S.

I'm a bit disappointed to see the third row seat belts don't fold away with the seats. They look out of place in the cargo area and are in the way when I'm likely to keep the seats folded 99% of the time.

I'm curious, how would the seatbelts fold out of the way?

There are clips on the side to hold the belts out of the way.
