When will R1x get V2H like the Lightning?

When will R1x get V2H (vehicle to house) charging like the Ford Lightning?

  • It’s probably in the currently delivered trucks. It only needs to be activated.

  • It’s coming S00N. (I wonder how early adopters will feel if 6 mos later such capacity is available.)

  • It’s likely to debut with Max packs. Perhaps along with 800V?

  • It’s like to debut with the dual motor vehicles.

  • It’s likely to debut in 2025 or after.

  • It may never be available on R1 vehicles.

I find it surprising that some people think this will never be offered. Is it that difficult to achieve?
I don’t know the exact bottleneck, but I’d guess,,,
Conceptually it's not that difficult to do but practically it is very difficult and I think the main problem is getting a set of standards that everone agrees to. This hasn't been terribly successful with unidirectional CCS let alone bidirectional.

I also think that most OEMs will want to watch what their bretheren do before committing to something like this. I just don't think the market place is that interested. Many here seem to consider it a must have but I wouldn't want it. There are other ways to get through power outages one of which is a Powerwall or similar installation which would have to be duplicated with the truck supplying the cells. IOW there would havve to be bidirectional conversion and a gateway.

A heftier inverter (actually a pair of them for 240) on the truck I''m all for.

Can’t wait for 20+ pages of debate on which wire is best / code compliant for this. ?

The debate isn't usually about what is compliant - that's what the NEC is there for. The debate is usually about whether one need concern himself about such annoyances.

A couple of weeks ago I finally got my Enphase solar system installed. I opted for the sunlight backup option without storage for now. Although limited, I can still use my solar panels during daylight hours when the grid is down. IMO, all standalone batteries aren't worth the current cost. Enphase is on record stating the next gen home battery they plan to release in 2023 will be a "significant step down in cost". Whenever it comes out, I'll see if Rivian comes through with a reasonable V2H setup that will also be capable of connecting to my Enphase setup. I'm not hopeful. I can't see Enphase or any other seller of home batteries having any incentive to play nice with an EV company when it would reduce demand for their own product. And Rivian's outright hubris in "we do everything better" makes me think they will only be willing to come up with their own hardware solution that won't play with anyone else's. For now I'm loving my solar, can't wait for the truck, and will assess my home storage options in 6-12 months.

I don’t get that vibe from Rivian. For something like this it would only be useful if it *did* play nicely with others.

Hopefully they will view something like this as a bigger picture need. I'm just pessimistic given their complete lack of common sense applied to their attitude about Android Auto/Carplay and Sirius XM.

Not difficult, just not worth pursuing, imo. It’s a niche use case and outside of a few extremes no one will actually use it. At best, it’s a marketing gimmick “checklist” item. Rivian has a LOT of things they could improve and should focus on before worrying about bi-directional charging.

Now if we’re only talking about a stronger inverter and upping the outlet amperage and maybe adding a 220V outlet in the bed — that’s a more compelling feature and is worth it. But the”V2H” that people squawk about is overblown.
I disagree about bi directional charging being a "niche" or marketing gimmick. For those of us that live in hurricane prone areas the ability to power our house from our vehicles is huge factor. Using the battery in the truck is a much better option that installing a whole house generator. I, for one, am hoping that Rivian adds the V2H capabilities sooner than later.

Agree 100%. V2H is not a gimmick. It hit 105 degrees in Houston today. Currently, there are 6,383 households without power and it is still 98 outside at 8pm! Luckily, my power has stayed on today, but tomorrow is going to be another scorcher. Being able to use the big battery pack of the Rivian as a generator is the easiest and cheapest way for me to have some backup power.

So CS replied to me recently. It's a bit of a non answer, but they are working on the capability, and I would be shocked if they made it in a way that didn't work for current R1 models.

Happy Wednesday (lostpacket),

Thank you so much for reaching out; I am always happy to help. I sincerely appreciate you being a member of the Rivian community.

These are great questions! We are developing a "vehicle-to-home" bidirectional charging capability. Once we have more insight on this, we will reach out to the community with an update.

Until then, feel free to reach out with any other questions or concerns. I hope you have a wonderful day and stay golden.

Your fellow adventurer,
(CS person's name)
For reference this is what I asked them:

Hi there,

I was hoping to ask about the potential for vehicle to home (V2H) bi-direction charging over CCS.

Is there anything hardware-wise that would prevent the current R1Ts from being able to implement it someday?

Do (or will) the current R1T implement the ISO 15118-20:2022 specification?
https://www.iso.org/standard/77845.html

I know Rivian is working on a bi-directional wall changer (as mentioned in the Q4 shareholder letter), will that work with the current R1Ts being built and delivered today?

Will Rivian work with the bi-directional Wallbox Quasar 2 when it is released?
https://wallbox.com/en_us/quasar2-dc-charger

V2H is very important to a lot of customers as it is so much better for the environment for people to reuse these huge batteries.

Thank very, very much for your time!

This was my exact thought when I got into my R1T this afternoon after power at my work went out and the truck said it was 120 degrees lmao…

The ford VTH system is cool but I think only a few people will actually get it. I’m hearing you have to buy their special charger that’s over priced then wire it into your house with a transfer switch just like you would a backup generator. That can be very expensive for a maybe I might need it.

Had 3 power outages at our house in the Sierras. We have a generator but something easy to use and less noisy would be great.

It is actually cheap where you start comparing it to installing a whole house generator. There seem to be more and more power outages happening everywhere.
