If this does happen to me, I would hope to get a really good place in line and get a truck right away as my original order date was November 28, 2018.

Sorry, was just having fun. Yellow paint doesn't cost more either but they clearly aren't pricing these options as cost-plus. Either it's "exclusive" and therefore more expensive or it's less likely that people will want it and therefore more expensive. I wouldn't expect much of a cost concession but who knows.
Sometimes colors do cost more....
https://www.eastwood.com/bright-white-basecoat-gallon-kit.html White
https://www.eastwood.com/eastwood-lemon-head-pearl-128oz-basecoat-gallon.html Yellow
https://www.eastwood.com/eastwood-coastal-highway-blue-basecoat-paint-4-1-gallon.html Blue
Blues and reds are commonly known to be the most expensive colors in the industry. Especially as most reds are multi-coat. Pearls, flakes, etc all take more time to apply then say, flat white or flat black.
That light colored wood had a value as it stood out- nobody really does that shade.

I get what you're saying though. "wood is wood". I doubt there is a huge cost variance between the two, it seems like the final call was likely due to quality and supply.

I too just got a THURSDAY email saying basically this very thing. Not stoked about it. I'm wondering if I am already waiting for the Max Pack, why do I care? MP and quad drive is really all I care about.
The Max pack discontinuation email coming next month

Nixing of the Explore package is just an undercover price hike. They learned their lesson from the last time.

No, I don't need vented seats, fancy headliner, fancy floor mats, or better audio. The only option I had were the tow hooks. That's not worth an additional $5000 anyways.

Incredibly frustrating waiting for this company to deliver while they continue to underwhelm even the lowest expectations.

Also RJ mentioned offering a more "upscale" version of the R1 products. Maybe they have decided that there is more demand on the higher end versus the lower end. It's probably higher margins as well.

I could see some additional premium options like massaging seats, fancy leather options, heads up display, etc. It sucks for anyone looking to get in below $80k, but there seems to be so many people willing to buy premium products that I can't fault them while supply is limited.
Remember...Rivian is removing items....not adding more.

I heard Gear Guard was also not going into the Explore edition. It's all history now since it won't be an option.

This is actually a good idea. If they had a low take rate of the explore package, and couldn’t get the Ash wood in large quantities, it makes sense to simplify things for now to keep production running. It doesn’t look like they’re outright canceling the lighter wood it’s just going to be delayed significantly.

Yes, totally agree. Definitely some variability in supply cost for wood/paint/etc. But it could also be cheap on the supply side and "niche" (aka expensive) on the demand side.

LA Silver, to your point, is extremely sparkly and flaky, yet it's "free". Limestone is a flat (nardo) grey -- yet costs (the consumer) more, while probably costing (the manufacturer) less. Silver used to be the #1 most popular color in the US (like 25% of all cars) and also one of the least risky for the OEM to offer.

The other buried cost is not just the raw materials but the costs incurred on the line. The more rare the thing, typically the most costly to make manufacture due to limiting the size of the line runs and the changeovers required.

Hilarious. But it would lowere my price by $10K. Maybe the removeable battery will come on line eventually.
