I used Vroom twice, in November 2021 and April 2022. In both cases, they beat Carmax and Carvana on price. I didn't check with anyone else. My first experience with Vroom was a nightmare, but I'll save you the details because the second experience was seamless.
My issue with vroom is they take your vehicle then don’t pay for a week or two…. And if they want to send you less then they can and will, and not much you can do about it.

Ive heard mixed reports about it, too. Some get paid what they were originally offered…. But more than a few stories of vroom saying they adjusted their offer after already taking the car.

I have sold a vehicle to both CarMax and Carvana and did so because both give money on-the-spot.

I got the agreed price from Vroom both times but it's not ideal giving a buyer your title and vehicle and then waiting to get paid. I like that Carvana pays on the spot. Carmax, on several attempted transactions, has always been low for me. The bottom line is you need to go get a few quotes.

I was mistaken about the Carvana quote - it actually turned out to be $1057 less than the Rivian price. I'm actually a bit surprised.

FWIW, some states only charge sales tax on new car sales on the price net of a trade. That can make a slightly lower trade value worth it.

I've gotten quotes on my 2020 mid sized non luxury SUV from Rivian, carvana, and driveway. Carvana is the highest, 2k less than kbb. But the Rivian trade in + tax incentives are about 1k less than Carvana. Probably going to go with Rivian for the convenience

What has everyone experienced recently with trade-ins? With the growth of websites like CarMax and Carvana and even local dealerships begging for inventory, I’ve never felt more overwhelmed with options for getting rid of my old car. Obviously pricing is a large component, but ease and convenience is pretty big too.

Is Rivian competitive in pricing? Convenient? Do they make it as easy as local dealerships and handle all the paperwork? I’m looking for good and bad experiences from those who’ve been through it already. Thanks!
100% Shop around. It's super easy to get quotes from multiple places and just go with the best. In my case Rivian offered me significantly more than other sites, so I went with them. The process was super easy.

Hi,

We had a 2016 Prius. Carmax was the lowest ($13.5k), Shift/Caravan midpoint ($15k) and Driveway was the most ($22k). Rivian's offer was $19.1k. We went with Rivian because it was the easiest, most convenient and no hassle (e.g. no need any further appointment to check the vehicle condition). Our R1T was delivered to us. The delivery guide had us signed some paperwork, picked up the car and that was it.

When I was taking my demo drive last month I asked our guide what were the most common vehicles they were seeing as trade ins. She said it was a little of everything, but mentioned lots of Tacomas, Priuses, and large trucks like Raptors, etc. Since I will eventually be trading in a Tacoma myself I expect them to probably low ball me on that if they are seeing a bunch of them come in. I know they have outsourced this process, but I imagine it is still a supply/ demand thing.

This is a big deal for me in WA state. By trading in to Rivian, I save about $3300 on sales tax.

2021 MY, 2018 Q7 , 2015 Q5 TDI,
Got my trade-in valuation and rivian was way under on my trade-in a 2018 q7. Almost 6k less than the local dealerships. Going to shop around some of the other websites while I wait for my truck to get transported.

I just started my steps and got my Rivian trade offer on my 2020 Honda Ridgeline RTL-E with 15k miles. Rivian offer was $31k, $5k under kbb. Driveway and CarMax offers pretty much matched kbb estimated trade in at around $36k. Carvana was super low at $29k. There are a few similar year/trim and miles for sale within 200 miles on Autotrader for $41-43000. Going to check local dealers next.
