Or, if you don't want to replace your garage door opener, this is super cheap and effective.

I'm sure there are wifi versions too.

OP, talk to Rivian. They should pay for this. It is well documented that the Gear Guard Alarm simply doesn't work, and they are treading in very dangerous territory by not acknowledging it as a real issue and by shipping the trucks with a known false claim. They have potential legal liability here so I would bet they will be very accommodating to you.

I find it baffling that the trucks were shipped with this issue, and that even the latest software update only fixes the "screen on" issue and not the fact that the alarm still won't sound for any reason.
Good point, they make a MyQ module like this as well, I am using it at the vacation house.

I have no ties to Chamberlain, just recommending something I have used for several years with satisfaction.

That really sucks and I’m sorry it happened to you.

Just out of curiosity, was there any sign of damage to other windows? I’m asking because I seem to recall another post where two thieves were trying to break in through a front door window but they couldn’t because the front door glass is laminated. They switched to a back door window and shattered the (not laminated) tempered glass pretty quickly. It could be that the thief who did this to you is more advanced than merely opportunistic if they knew they needed to go directly to the back door window.

I hope Rivian takes care of this for you quickly since Gear Guard isn’t delivering the protection that many of us thought it would. It’s embarrassing for them when I consider the first vehicle I owned which would sound an alarm if a door was opened while locked was built in 1995. I think that Rivian should address these security issues (no alarm and no video captured) as a high priority.

I wonder what sensors the "alarm" actually relies on? Only the cameras? A glass break sensor? Motion/tilt sensors? Door jamb switches?

But I wouldn't put it past people to accidentally break a window in their garage, which isn't covered under warranty and claim that since gear guard didn't "catch the thief that did it," Rivian should eat it and repair as a goodwill gesture.
A police report should do the trick. Humans are not known for being honest, but most aren't willing to commit fraud while also lying to the police.

I was curious about this too, so I watched the Gear Guard explanation video. At about 1:30, he says there are 5 cameras monitoring about 4 feet, and if someone gets to close, about 1 foot, it starts recording. No other detectrion tech such as vibration/motion, glass break, etc. is mentioned.

Could the thieves have deleted the video? Probably unlikely but there was that other post that said the screens all turn on if you open the door from a window that's rolled-down/broken even while the truck is locked.

This really sucks, but I know how it happens, left the garage door open before, but now I have more sensors than you need to make sure I know when that happens.

I also created a request for gear guard, while not official Rivian do apparently take a loom at the site feel free to vote or add a new one like sound alarm if the window breaks there are so many microphones and the sound is easy to detect.

Doesn’t Amazon Alexa have a security feature for the echos in the house? Listening for broken glass and such? I wonder if they could integrate that into Gear Guard and have it always listening. I have always installed aftermarket alarms in our vehicles that have shock/motion sensors and microphones just incase of a smash-n-grab. Seems strange they don’t already have this implemented with all of the hardware already installed in the R1’s. Hopefully Gear Guard gets a fine tuning and some improvements with a software update sooner rather than later!

Also, make sure you have wifi connectivity out in your garage before investing in a smart garage opener or anything. If your truck gets updates out there already, then you’re probably fine. But just double check to be sure.

Sorry to hear about the break-in and hope your move goes well!

Time for some home automation that notifies you whenever the garage door is opened or closed. It's saved me from leaving ours open overnight a few times.
Such a good neighbor - they saw the garage door open and din’t care to the you know... sad really..

I had a neighbor across the street from me, years ago, the morning came and I went to open the garage door to take Sammie out, the door was OPEN.

While I was outside, my neighbor mention to me .. I saw your garage door open all night. I said, why didn’t you call me. She stumbled on her words and I walked away, never spoke to her again.

Back to the story - it will be interesting to hear feedback from the SC on why GG didn’t activate or the alarm didn’t activate.

That's why I just say "no" when a neighbor asks me a question that could backfire like that ;). Also I generally don't talk to them.

@TheHedgehog116 DON’T wipe down the truck - if you called the police have them come check for fingerprints… They probably tried the front door first and moved to the rear. Just a thought..

This seems odd to me, I know that the alarm and gear guard are far from perfect, but to completely miss something like this seems a lot. I don't want to insult OP, but call me skeptical. Truely hope I'm wrong, and people aren't stirring the pot for goodwill replacements.

That said, was the garage secured? I think the real news here is someone broke into your house. The Rivian is salt on the wound sure.
Not that's not true just 2 days ago my wife noticed that there where no videos recorded after she found a flyer placed under the windshield wipers. And it wasn't working and as per Rivian customer support after I submitted a ticket it required a hard reset (Left steering button+hazard) and it started working again.

Definitely no door jamb switch/sensor. Opening my door does not trigger the alarm. I don't think there's a glass break sensor, either, given we've seen at least a couple broken windows without an alarm being triggered. The manual indicates there is a tilt sensor, although I haven't seen independent verification of that function.

Has anyone actually had the police do that? I mentioned fingerprints once and they basically laughed at me. No one died, so all you get is a report. "Deal with your insurance company" is their mentality, more often than not.

My alarm was triggered when my R1T was jacked up to remove the wheels (for powder coating) so the tilt sensor at least appears to work.

I do not, however, get videos of all motion around it, especially cars going in and out of the spaces next to me. People? Yes. Cyclists in bike lanes? Yes. But cars appear and disappear between videos without any motion events themselves.
