I can't speak to what anyone should do.

My only regret when it comes to getting the R1T is rushing to get it as soon as they said they had one that matched my configuration. I simply wasn't prepared to take delivery as I hadn't even decided which vehicle to trade in on it.

If I would have waited I would have saved myself the hassle of rushed decisions, and some of the early FW/SW glitches. Heck it wasn't until the Camp Mode update where I could even fairly review the truck because things like the proximity unlocking/locking were so wonky.

Generally speaking its always a good idea to wait about a year before getting a brand new model especially from a brand new company. So basically I didn't follow my own advise.

I think prices on used EV's will be fairly stable, but if you're worried you could always sell the Model S early and simply go without it until getting an inventory R1T or the R1S.

Personally I would decide whether I really wanted the R1T or the R1S, and use that decision to make my decision.

looking for some feedback, which I understand could be a bit biased as I’m asking on a Rivian forum. Lol.

I have a 21 Tesla Model S Long a range Refresh, 14700 miles, and is pretty mint. I have the ability to trade it in for exactly my payoff and grab a silver on black R1T adventure edition with just over 600 miles on it. The asking is around 100k. Id have to put down 10k and my payment due to the times and APRs through the roof, would hop up $100 a month.

im caught as I’ve been a Tesla owner for some time, as I’ve stated in prior threads I’ve owned 4. I love the tech, etc. I never used FSD though. The yoke isn’t an issue, as I actually like it.I don’t travel often in my vehicle so the charging network wouldn’t hurt me too bad. My wife has a Model Y as well for traveling when we do.

What would some of you prior or present Tesla owners due if you could make this happen as well? Interested in feedback.

Pics included to show what’s going and what would be coming.

We have a Model 3, 2020, and are happy with it but have a reservation for a RIT--and would trade the Tesla for the Rivian in a heartbeat. We really miss not having a truck.

The be clear, owning BEV never makes financial sense compared to a ICE. The $20-40k difference, invested, would take many, many, many miles to break even in with a similarly optioned truck.
To be fair, I didn't say I believed I was saving money by purchasing an $80k vehicle. What I implied was that I think the idea of daily driving a truck that gets 15 mpg when the owner rarely needs the truck features is silly.

The R1T is like driving a very nice car that can do truck stuff... And be the most efficient vehicle I've ever owned... All in one package. It feels good!

That said, people absolutely could save money with these (less so post March 1). For example, I could see people going from two cars (sedan and a traditional truck) to just one R1T. Or, someone that drives a well equipped traditional truck a ton of miles/year could save money over time.

PS- SO FAR, we haven't had any issues at all since we took delivery of our R1T.

I Read his post, and he specifically states he doesn’t want to lose his pre 3/22 pricing (even tho he ordered post.). Again, I acknowledge that it was happening as the R1 shop came on line- and certainly prior- but I think it’s a stretch to claim Rivian is currently prioritizing delivering post 3/22 pre orders. Nothing supports that.
Prioritizing is a strong word, and I will back away from that - but there are orders getting through because of the litany of variables at play, including your location, configuration, current batching, and, to some extent for sure, RIVIAN needing as much as capital as possible so people who are paying more post March 1 are more attractive.

Also, the forum represents a small fraction of Rivian owners. The fact that people aren't here in droves discussing whether they did or didn't get their R1T sooner rather than later isn't a definitive evidence that anything is or isn't happening. The sample size is too small and we've all self selected to be here so we've, by nature, violated random assignment/selection.

After reading this, I decided to just place another order and see which comes first. I’m hoping I have a lucky lottery pick awaiting for what it’s worth and get an email sooner than later.

Thanks to all for the convo and insight today, as it’s appreciated.

Looking forward to chatting about other Rivian related stuff soon!
Goodluck brother! Hope the R1T fairy visits you soon and NOT S00N!

what a humble/casual plug of your youtube channel :D

Ive seen your content and your car looks familiar.

before I go on just remember that NOBODY needs an 80k electric car or truck, we tend to take this too seriously. It just something that you WANT

that being said there are 2 classes of rivian people

#1) Willing to take it easy, let bugs get worked out and saving upwards of 15k on a vehicle by not buying into the hype, by just knowing that the prices on the used market have been falling from 110k down to the 90s and it makes far more financial sense to wait before pulling the trigger

or

#2) Dont care, I want the truck, I want to be SEEN in the truck and stopped to get asked a million questions on the hottest truck on the market. I want it now and are willing to pay over msrp just to have it 8 months to a year earlier. You want the thing tomorrow and are willing to pay what it takes, and fully understand that its a new company and there will be growing pains but it doesn't affect you as much because you have a backup tesla anyway...

which one are you?

Personally, I'm #2. I paid in the low-mid 90s for my rivian and never looked back, matter of fact I grimace when going back into my model X. Doesn't matter how loud the axle/suspension noise is or the fact that the tonneau cover sounds like a dying cat, I just leave it close and crank the volume to drown out suspension noise. I wanted the truck, got the truck, no regrets. Seeing them drive around and thinking that I have to wait a year to get one, I literally lost sleep

you are a content creator, buy the damn truck and make some videos. Rivian stuff is hot now. Teslas are an old hat as there are 2M of the things on the road

Only the humblest of plugging from me, my friend! ? (Drop a sub why dont ya! HA!)

I fully agree. Im for sure a big, fat #2! Im a web developer, digital marketer, and very minor content creator. I dig tech. I love vehicles. New tech thats a vehicle? Oh my! I want in and try it on for size.

I agree with every one's take on my question though, and they are all valid points, even the ones about "letting them weed their garden" before buying. Me, personally, I look and see some Tesla owners who we're buyers right when they launched the S. I envy that they stood by and grew with the company, and now are here enjoying seeing one of their babies grow up to be a powerhouse quarterback. I, too, would like that feeling, and Im willing to pay a little overhead to be a part of it now, rather than later, and perhaps enjoy the process as it comes.

With the fact that my Model S is gaining miles and is about at its height for value, Im willing to part with it no matter what. Another major reason why I am ready is that my insurance is insanity with it, seeing I have an 18 year old college student on my policy. Ill save a pretty penny offing the S and hopping into the Rivian, per Progressives quote I got. My thinking is if I dont like it after all, cant deal with the quirks, and so on, it surely is holding more value than the Model S is and trading in/selling wont be difficult at all, and will be hold much more value. I perhaps would go back to a Model Y Performance at that point, but Id hate to not give this beauty a try. Im 90% sure Ill be fine with it and keep it for a while. One thing I hate already.... no text support. Please OTA that update soon Rivian! HA.

I tell my kids that life is short. Dont ever look back and ask "what if". Even if it doesnt work out, its better to say, "I tried". I wont be hurting for money, and no ones getting hurt in the process.

Im 99% sure Im buying the vehicle tomorrow.

its funny that earlier in the thread you were like "oH i GueSs ILL juSt wAit tILL nExt YeAr"

pepperidge farm remembers :D

if you can afford to (which you can) buy the damn truck, if you hate, it sell it in 2 months and lose a little money.

I was one of the first few people to have a model S in the northeast years ago, I personally knew my service guys in watertown. when I spotted a fellow tesla owner it was a big production, waves, flashes smiles, stopping to talk etc. nowadays Tesla's are like camrys. Nobody cares. Model 3's everywhere not realizing there were OGs waving the tesla flag to pave their way for the model 3

The rivian brings that feeling back,

I went through all my posts on this thread. Never once did I make myself sounds like the I “will wait till next year” because I’m afraid of being a beta tester, or because I’m scared to live in the moment,,,, but if that’s what you’re brain tells you I meant, apologies. I did state I put in a reservation but I didn’t mean because I’m afraid of some quirks and growing pains. Pepperidge Farms is confused. ?

Its so true. Model 3s and Ys are everywhere. White ones. Galore. Definitely lost its “wow, another Tesla owner. Let’s “dock”, appeal. (Haha, adult joke. Let’s all laugh).

yes thats because I made it up

for some reason I get frustrated like an old war veteran when I see them driving around smiling, when we paved the way dealing with all the first model year issues so that they can have their reliable cars :D

anyway yeah, buy the damn truck already. now you can dock with other rivian owners!

Oh yea. For sure.
Do you think that's because they didn't like it? Or financial trouble? Or maybe they were able to sell at a profit?

It just seems like a red flag to have people selling a car just a few months after buying it.
