Was hauling a bunch of stuff this week and, when backing up, noticed for the first time that the rear camera is totally blocked with the tailgate down. Seems like a design oversight. The bed is short and clearly Rivian expects us to haul stuff with the tailgate down, so it seems odd that they put the camera in a place where it clearly won't work in that mode.

Is this how the backup cam works in other trucks? Just curious.

I can't imagine any place that they could put the rear camera that would not be blocked by lowering the tailgate. I think the only solution would be to include a 2nd camera on the top of the tailgate that would point rearward when the tailgate was down.

We need the camera over the back window by the high brake lights to be usable for a rear camera also!

Be nice to watch cargo area as well while you carry a load.

It's currently positioned roughly at the top of the license plate, mostly blocked by the tailgate. At the bottom of the plate, it would have line of sight and be at least partially usable. But, yes, a second camera could also work. Alas, doesn't exist.

All trucks have their back up camera usually at the handle of the tail gate. Some of the higher end trims or 2500’s etc have a camera that looks into the bed for hooking up a 5th wheel. My RAM1500 has a camera by the upper brake light over the bed but it’s actually for the rear view mirror which is awesome. So for trailering or I have a load where I can’t see out my rear window I flip a switch and see live camera behind me. It’s positioned in a way it’s not looking down in the bed but just behind the tail gate.

But long story short yes… back up cameras just look at the ground when your tailgate is down. That is just how they all are

I predict a software enhancement is coming to enable the camera near the 3rd brake lights when the tailgate is down.
I hope so. Would be nice to have it default to that camera when the tailgate is down and be an option at other times.

Wassym said more camera options/views were in work for Q4. Maybe I read too much into it, but based on this post, I took it as meaning the bed camera could be selected.

Enabling the bed camera, and placing the image in the 360 overview would be awesome. As a new truck driver who's totally paranoid about stuff flying off the back, have the contents of the trunk rendered on the 360 view would be comforting (unless things are actually flying off).

I'd really like to see all the cameras added to the camera select option, certainly the rear cab one at least because that's just useful to see a trailer or load even if the tailgate is up.
