Anybody else delaying their purchase for a 2023?

At the risk of being drawn and quartered -- allow me to present both the a$$hole opinion and the devil's advocate:

A$$HOLE:

ITT: People who go to a Rolex dealer and ask for a discount.

If you're finicky over a few thousand dollars of resale value three-to-five years from now, you should not be looking at buying a $75,000-$100,000+ vehicle. Period. No amount of monetary brain-puzzle justification can exist. It's a luxury.

If you want to save money, don't buy an electric vehicle at all right now, buy a very old prius with a hundred thousand miles+ on it.

DEVILS ADVOCATE:

It's your money, you have a right to spend it how you choose, when you choose, on what you choose. No one in this thread (including the A$$HOLE version of me above) can tell you what to do. You be you. Save your money/wait for the new features. Whatever makes you happy man.

I just don't get this logic. These are trucks meant to be enjoyed. I feel bad for the people who are looking to flip or buying for monetary purposes and not enjoy it. You are missing the point. It's like the Ferrari collector who never drives the car like it was meant to be. If you want the Rivian, get it and enjoy it. Also, I can see Rivian not honoring the original purchase price for the pre March reservation holders on the second attempt. "Hey, we offered you it, you said no. Now its $100k." I have no regrets for taking delivery of my 2022 and enjoy the hell out if it.

so for ice vehicles this was true because features and options would change. You do not see this with Tesla. Model years make minimal difference in resale. Honestly even mileage doesn’t make the biggest dent. Example below. Two Tesla different model years same options (one has wheel covers on but both have the same wheel option, newer model has the more expensive white interior which actually brings the price closer).
I don’t think model year will have much if any impact on Rivians unless they bring “model year upgrades” which it doesn’t seem like they’re doing. Seems more adjustments on the fly like Tesla.

Hello all. I received contact from my Guide last week stating that they matched my R1T configuration and to get ready to start the 8-step purchase process. It sounded like the truck was already built and awaiting shipment.

With only 10-weeks remaining in the year I decided to delay my purchase and wait for a 2023 R1T. I ordered mine on 2/5/21 so I figured a few more months will be worth the wait.

Is anybody else in the same boat?

I don't know your situation but foregoing the tax credit in itself sounds like a big waste, unless you're in the boat of not being priced out by the new limits.

This is clearly not work the risk of losing at least half of the tax credit IMHO. Every Rivian in 2022 qualifies, full stop.

The average consumer has no idea one has radar vs not. And my understanding is Tesla disabled radar systems in vehicles that had them and all model 3 and y are using Tesla vision only.

Seems strange to say because it is the end of October and all manufactures are producing 2023 models right now, so what is the purpose of waiting. Frankly don't care but I think Rivian should push you to the back of the line.

Also, fresh off the presses: Only manual tonneau covers will be installed at the factory. The covers will ship in early 2023.

Yeah it makes zero sense. If you want the car, take the car.

The people who are trying to predict used car prices 5 years out should take a look at what happened in 2020 -2022 when used prices skyrocketed during covid. Nobody predicted that. Just like nobody can predict whether your truck will be worth in 5 years when the auto market may be wildly different.

It's a false sense of control over something that has very little certainty.

It would be interesting to know initial purchase price for both. I bet the money lost per mile driven is lower for the 2020 owner who drove his / her car well over twice as much at the owner of the newer one at a cost of $2k. I also think the modest price difference is much more attributable to vehicle mileage difference rather than model year.
