It doesn‘t make business sense to install a 1.0 series powered tonneau cover with a flawed design.
Depends on the failure rate, what the contract is with the supplier, etc.

Which is exactly what they are still doing even today... and I agree it doesn't make sense.

Rivian's only way out of this without spending huge $$$$$$$ is to use every existing part that's already in place and just add a second motor and bracket on the passenger side. Can that be done? Possibly.. but it's more likely they will have to replace the existing long jackshaft as well. If they are forced to replace the whole smash (tonneau, gears, jackshaft, mounts and add a 2nd motor) it will be a huge financial disaster.

Like I said, engineers probably requested more time to the leadership team to work on the powered tonneau cover but we’re overridden. Getting the truck to market was a priority. They had to know the cover had issues.

I wonder what the actual failure rate on the powered tonneau is.
It's a real mystery. I have one that works. Or I should say, I have one that has worked all three times that it's been (nervously) opened and closed...

High enough to redesign it, not enough to stop sale it.

When I did my first mile drive I already had the luxury of spending months here hearing about so many tonneau failures. And when my Rivian host asked me to push the button to open the cover I looked right at her while the thing creaked awake like my spine every morning. She was grimacing which she tried to hide by smiling then we started laughing. Only my buddy who didn’t know much about Rivian at all didn’t understand why….

I heard that Rivian is shipping trucks without the covers now to retrofit the new design later. You still had to pay for it though. Made it sound like they might have run out of the original bad design.
My chat with customer service said this was not correct, however take that with a grain of salt. They said to "not listen to the forums, all trucks are still being shipping with powered tonneaus"

Thanks for posting and the great pix!

I have "manual tonneau" configured which for all I care could be "no tonneau" at delivery with a promise to ship the manual tonneau panels to me at a later date.
Rob and I have been in the same boat for a while. We're not going anywhere as we paddle in opposite directions.

Kinda like the open bed option to be honest. My tonneau stays closed cause it sounds like a torture chamber when opening.
Blood curdling screams?

Don’t know if this has been posted, but i just finished chatting with a Rivian rep and they pointed me to this article with the most important point:
For the foreseeable future, all R1Ts will be built with either a manual tonneau cover or no tonneau cover.

I guess that also answers the question of whether the powered cover can be installed later at an SC.

It’s frustrating they didn’t link to this article on the order page where you can change your options, or send via email to folks who had powered tonneau selected…

Apparently they did send an email, and included the tidbit that orders with no tonneau will come with the current bed design until early 2023 when they will start being delivered with a bed with no rails. That seems silly to me. Those people can’t upgrade if they do that. ??‍♂
