Yes, every load of any size in any vehicle I carry it in gets secured by redundant mechanisms so I can ensure I'm not the asshole that killed someone because I think a situation is unlikely.

I'm not going to change my opinion on this - always secure your loads. Your convenience is not worth even one single human life, so get over yourself, spend the extra 3 minutes, and make sure you're not going to kill someone. There are hundreds of ways and scenarios an unsecured load, in ANY vehicle, can be a danger.
I use redundancy to secure my loads (when possible).
#1 - ensure the tailgate is closed
#2 - close the tonneau cover (if possible)

lol. What?

I'm 100% onboard with securing loads, but suggesting that people need redundancy in case their vehicle fail is kinda ridiculous. I can pretty much guarantee you that almost no tradespeople are going to be making sure that even if their tailgate opens, their load remains in place. That's not reasonable. If tailgates are failing, that's on Rivian. That'd be a recall. Do you also tie every load down in the back of an SUV in case the hatch opens? ?
Agree.
I haul firewood, how do I tie that load down?

I just got back from a hunting trip and had three coolers full of elk and pheasant in the bed. If one (or more) of them would have flown out of the truck bed, that would have been a pretty ugly scene on the freeway.

A net? A tarp? Any of the methods that tons of other people driving around use when their load overtops their bed?

I've had a trash can lid fly out of a truck bed in front of me on the highway and was completely pissed when it hit the front of my car.

I've had an entire couch come off a truck and speed past me on its own trajectory on the turnpike. Watched it go past me in the adjacent lane.

I've dodged an entire roll of carpet that came out of a truck and unrolled itself with slow-motion elegance, causing rush-hour traffic to scramble.

And now that I own my first truck, It never occurred to me to tie my stuff down when it was in the truck bed with the cover closed. It may very well be best practice.

I'm not sure you understand the meaning of redundancy. Those are not redundant systems, especially if the 'if possible' comes into play.

30 years of driving pickup trucks and all I have lost was a single boot. Somewhere in the middle of Nebraska, I had a work boot disappear. Maybe it fell out, maybe it was stolen in a rest area, or maybe a homeless person took it while I was at a hotel?

I agree with securing loads that can fly out, or when the tailgate is open, but I never worry about the tailgate opening on its own. I always give it a good tug after closing to make sure it is closed.

Sorry, you missed the sarcasm. The internet is really bad at portraying that.

I don't heap firewood.
The bottom line is that the best way to protect yourself and others on the roads is to not drive like an asshole, don't drive impaired, and stop playing on the phone.

Yea, my bad, couldn't tell. Maybe more emoticons? We need a sarcasm font that's not italics :D

Not sure why you used the firewood example if you didn't want me to respond to that.

Agreed on your other points, and none of those are mutually exclusive to securing unsecured loads, either.

I've been using this ratcheting cargo bar in my Avalanche. Works great, especially for securing heavy stuff at the rear gate so it does not slide forward, like propane tanks, 5 gallon gas cans, etc. It's also available with a Cargo Net option. You can buy it from Bezos
