What a kick to the NUTS! I've been a massive supporter, attended all the events, got friends to order the R1T, been holding out for the MAX pack for cold weather / towing... and feel like it's been a bait and switch since my reservation Dec. 2018. I've been played.

This almost certainly means I don't even get the chance to buy another Rivian.
And R1T only?
… then make the R1S in the full length wheelbase.

By 2024 – pardon my tmesis, but – it's a-whole-nother ballgame of electric vehicle technology and there's just no way of knowing what technology will be in an EV battery. It won't be a 180kWh slab of 2170s or probably even 4680's, it's going to be LFP or any one of the "this changes everything" technologies that gets announced seemingly every week for the last year.

Has Rivian quiet-quit the R1 (and all of their consumer vehicles including the R2?) in favor of delivery vans … and electric bicycles?

Can't blame you for being miffed. I am too.

As far as new tech in a 2024 Rivian R1T Max Pack, I doubt it. They have only made 15,000-20,000 vehicles in their whole history. They probably need to make another 50,000 vehicles before they invest in new engineering and new manufacturing.

Although, they use electric motors made by Bosch. And the batteries are made by Samsung SDI. So the question is, can Samsung and Bosch change the design(s), and not charge Rivian a megaton to do that? It would probably be cheaper for all to just keep the engineering all the same for another 12 months.

That'll make my brother-in-law happy, he has dual+max configured.

If the dual motor max has some sort of locker and longer range there will be manyy switchers from quad in front of him. Presumably there are thousands of OG max quad motor orders in the queue.

Inflation could make OG pricing look even better in 2024. Falling battery prices could make OG pricing less attractive in 2024.

I won't take a refund even if I buy another vehicle. The order could look great in 2025 when quad max finally delivers.

Wait, what? Are there no tie-down hooks in the bed anymore? I thought there was D-rings around the edges...

They replaced the cool, over-sized decorative hooks with simple black loops and in the frunk, the rather cool looking hooks were deleted altogether, though the frunk bin plastic has shapes where those hooks might have been anchored. Pretty trivial, but one of those "huh … that's a shame …" things I noticed when the R1T was delivered.
