Anyone else recently take delivery without their bed cover installed and realize the spare can be stolen even when the vehicle is locked? The "help me I'm trapped" button works regardless of vehicle lock status. anyone can walk up to my truck, push the human release button (since I don't have my bed cover yet), drop the gate, and pop the spare hatch right open. Fortunately I'm usually parked in a garage and my works parking lot is surveilled..... Just a heads-up to turn your gear guard on!

While I see your point many trucks/vans have undermount spare tire storage and many others use hitch/tailgate spare tire mounts. I wouldn't be super concerned.

That said I wonder if they could disable the escape button with the non-functional power tonneau.

And anyone can just take the spare off of almost any Wrangler. Only those are visible.

Pretty sure most people who do not have an R1T dont know there is an entrapment button. You could Always just disconnect the button.

Given the limited utility of a Rivian wheel and tire*, I’d be more concerned with people who don’t have a spare on their R1T and use that space for storing other expensive things. It’s too bad there isn’t an accessory hasp or similar you could pass a gear guard cable through. Then that area would stay secure even with the tailgate down and without Rivian having to modify the release handle.

*Seriously, could any other vehicle use this? I think even the Ram with the wheels which can be made to work on a Rivian have hubs too wide to mount a Rivian wheel.

If you don't know the vehicle, you're not going to even know how to get the spare. I've had vehicles with externally mounted spares that were readily easy to steal, and have never had one stolen.

Good point. My wife's on her 4th Wrangler (and we've owned 5 other vehicles with door mounted spares), all with nice OE wheels but never had any issues. We need to stop discussing this, I'm feeling a JINX coming on...

I'm not sure - I'm honestly not too worried about it just thought it cheeky as some owners are still waiting on their spares
